Eight people have been killed in a suicide bombing near the city of Ramadi, in Iraq's Anbar province, west of Baghdad, Iraqi police say.

Several policemen were among the dead. At least 14 other people were injured.

Ramadi was formerly an insurgency stronghold but attacks have fallen as Sunni tribal militias have joined the US and Iraqi government forces.

Separately, the US military said an al-Qaeda leader named Abu Ghazwan had been killed in a raid north of Baghdad.

The US said Abu Ghazwan was a bomb-maker in charge of a number of al-Qaeda cells in northern Iraq.

He was said to have been shot dead during clashes between insurgents and US-backed Iraqi forces near the town of Tarmiyah, in Salahuddin province.

The suicide bombing took place either at a police station outside Ramadi or at a highway checkpoint, according to different reports.
