In the spirit of strengthening my voice, I chose to attend the National Iranian American Council (NIAC)’s Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. held between Sep 30th and Oct 2nd. While attending the conference, I met Iranian Americans from across the country. Through hands-on interactive workshops I learned how an unprepared community can be defenseless and at risk while an organized and engaged community can build strong relationships and project considerable power>>>

قانون حجاب اجباری سمبل جمهوری اسلامی است و به نظر می رسد خواست حفظ جمهوری اسلامی خواست جمعی اکثریت مردم ایران در وهله ی حاضر نباشد، پس این قانون چیزی تحمیلی و در واقع نماد بی ارادگی تک تک شهروندان در تعیین سرنوشت و نوع حکومت برای خود است. از این رو، قانون حجاب اجباری ظرفیت مسئله شدن برای تمام شهروندان امروزه ایران و نه تنها زنان را دارد>>>

I would love to see the Iranian mullahs sink into oblivion—replaced by better or worse, who knows? But even I, the perennial optimist, cannot believe that any of these benighted countries will ever improve or even evolve. Right now, I am much more preoccupied by the reelection of Obama — a Romney/Ryan victory would make the Bush years seem like a golden age—and its per se importance, and not, like other Iranian-Americans, only because of the impact on Iranian politics>>>

In her eloquent style, my friend writes her own impression of the ambiguous path we call life, the meaning of the word ‘home’ and all the fears and concerns entailed in such a journey, she draws a vivid sketch of the salmons that are doomed to be dinner for the bears>>>

من همون جایی که وایساده بودم خشکم زد. انگار دوش آب سرد و آب جوش هم‌زمان روی سرم وا شدن. دست دراز کردم و کاغذها رو برداشتم. چشمام تار می‌دیدن. از میون اشک‌هایی که هنوز سرازیر نشده بودن دیدم اسمی که رو تقاضانامه بود، اسم من نبود. نفسم دوباره بالا اومد. دنیا که جلو چشمم تاریک شده بود، دوباره روشن شد>>>

Whenever there is violence against non-violence, hatred over compassion, there is a war of values. But I think that we lacked political maturity and a strong civil society in Iran in 1979 and we have come very far from then to the 2009 popular uprising. I think there was a false sense that with the downfall of the Shah we could achieve democracy instantly>>>

نوع باورهای بی مایه راجع به عربها در نزد کسانی رواج دارد که برخوردی با عربها نداشته اند. شما به ندرت می توانید فردی خوزستانی بیابید که فرقی بین ایرانیان عرب و فارس بداند. برخی ساکنان نادان مناطق دیگر اما می انگارند که عرب ستیزی نشانه ایران دوستی است و با تعریفی فاشیستی از جامعه ایده آل ایرانی آدم را به تهوع وا می دارند>>>

ما چگونه می توانیم نسبت به این مرد بزرگ، که از میان مادران و پدران 2500 سال پیش مان برخاسته و در حافظه ی بشری جاودانه شده بی اعتنا باشیم؟ آن هم در زمانه ای که می بینیم قرن ها پس از او (یعنی فقط 150 سال پیش) شخصیتی چون آبراهام لینکن بخاطر پافشاری در آزادی سازی بردگان اينگونه مورد احترام و تحسین نه تنها ملت خویش که حتی شخصیت هایی از چپ ترین تا راست ترین مردمان کشورهای مختلف است؟>>>

I never met her, however, the picture her sister draws of her makes me feel I have known her for ages. In all the photos I have seen of her, she wears an innocent smile. A smile now captive in a prison cell in Evin. Nooshin was teaching a group of young students who according to “The law" are not permitted to seek higher education in Iran and because of this crime she is in prison today. Nooshin was once one of those youth, herself, who were denied education in that country>>>

While just a few years ago, the only decent restaurants where you could satisfy your craving for good old-fashioned Persian cuisine in Toronto were all located in the stretch between Yonge & Steeles and Yonge & Sheppard – an area affectionately known among Iranians here as Tehranto - restaurants such as The Pomegranate have been changing things up a bit in the ‘Big Smoke’>>>

What this newly invented term “Normal Muslims” mean? I assume there must be a reality of “Abnormal Muslim” as well? What is the NORMAL ISLAM anyway? Can anyone define it as is? I am not asking your opinion i.e. what it ought to be or some interpretation of someone else’s interpretation. Your opinion of course is respected and you are entitled to it, but I am asking, rephrasing my question, is Quran THE NORMAL ISLAM, and everything else is just somebody’s opinion and interpretation? >>>

"مجتبی ثمره هاشمی" که تا چندین سال پیش در ساختار سیاسی حکومت و بافت مافیایی قدرت، از عناصر ناشناخته و در زمره "سربازان گمنام امام زمان" بود، بناگاه حضورش بعنوان "مشاور ارشد" شخص رئیس جمهور، از همان ابتدا حتی در بسیاری از رسانه های وابسته به رژیم نیز با این سوال تعجب برانگیز مواجه شد که « این شخصیت پشت پرده دولت کیست؟!»>>>
