EU asks Iran to halt Shojaee's Execution

SCE Campaign

The Presidency of the European Union is deeply concerned by the news of the imminent execution of Behnoud Shojaee, who was convicted and sentenced to death for a crime committed when he was a minor.

The Presidency notes that this juvenile death sentence is in direct contravention of the Islamic Republic of Iran's international obligations and commitments, specifically as set out in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, both clearly prohibiting the execution of minors or people who have been convicted of crimes committed when they were minors.

The Presidency urges the Islamic Republic of Iran to comply with International Law and to immediately halt the execution of Mr Shojaee and of all other juvenile offenders on the death row, taking in consideration alternative sentences for juvenile offenders and respect for international norms and standards that provide safeguards guaranteeing the protection of the rights of those facing the death penalty.

The Presidency avails of this opportunity to reiterate the European Union's longstanding position against the death penalty in all circumstances, regardless of what crimes have been committed by the individuals concerned. The EU considers the death penalty to be a cruel and inhuman punishment and that it is not effective in terms of deterrence.

The Presidency again urges the Iranian authorities to immediately cease all executions and apply a moratorium on executions, with a view to abolishing the death penalty, as called for in the United Nations General Assembly resolution on a Moratorium on the use of the death penalty, as adopted in December 2007.

Isn't it great? Thanks to EU's intervention, Behnoud is going to live at least for one more month.

If US or EU are atrocious to Muslims, you cannot ignore a minor's life in Iran. This minor has nothing to do with the "evil" West.

You' d better off take arm to join those who fight the evil enemy instead of cheering the IRI to execute Innocents in Iran. A minor cannot be judicially sentenced to death unless your rancor prevails over your moral.
I am sure many Muslims do not share your rancor.

You murder, You die! very simple!

I agree with Abarmand. If the so called EU presidency is so worried about human life, why are they quiet with the killings of millions under US's flag in Palestine, Iraq, and elsewhere.
As for murderers in Iran, or elsewhere, he who kills, he dies. So simple. It is true in any religion and custom. Those who were murdered by the murderers, had precious lives too. What gives the murderer the right to kill?

Calling the family of the victim

by Azarin Sadegh on

My friend (who is Ali Mahin Torabi's aunt), has managed to find the phone number of the family of the victim in Behnoud's case. We have already called them and tried to convince them to forgive Behnoud.

Please contact me if anyone else would like to call this family, before it is too late.

Thanks,

Azarin

PS: My friend is also trying to find an Iranian journalist who could possibly write about Benoud's case in Iran, for public awareness on his case in Iran. Please let me know if you know anyone...Thanks!

Benoud is a 20 years old young man who is going to be executed tomorrow evening (California time). At this point, i am sure his family wouldn't care much about Iraq and Bush and terrorism and millions of death in Africa by hunger and by Aids.

Nobody can save the world, but maybe you could at least have the decency to pretend that you do care about this one man's tragedy.

and while we are arguing Behnoud can be executed this week!

I very much thank president of EU for taking such actions to help save Iranian children from inhumane executions.

I agree with you. I guess I am mad because I think everything is moving towards a war with Iran, and somehow I see these connected.

two wrongs...

by IRANdokht on

Dear Abarmard

You do have a point about the inhumane acts all around the world and the massacre of the innocents happening while so many are quietly watching, but two wrongs don't make it right. There is a breach of human rights happening in Iran which demands the world's attention.

I think we can use all the help we can get to stop senseless executions. I know you are thinking there is a political agenda behind it, but please look at Behnood as a human being whose life is on the line...

Personally, I can't stand to see anyone's blood shed in a war or executions, whether an Iraqi, an Israeli, or an Iranian.

Life is precious.

Are they worried about Human life

by Abarmard on

It's interesting that EU is so worried about human life, are sitting quietly while millions of Iraqis are being killed and a possible war against Iran is right around the corner. Not to say that they content is wrong, but how they politicize human rights is just sickening.

Eu must warn Mr. Bush and warmongers, Israeli regimes on their continuous human rights violations so they can be taken more seriously.

Otherwise, if they want to demonize Iran so it would justify their beautiful bombs, then they can shove it all up their own behind.
