Women on the House of Justice

Translated by:

Dr. Ameen U. Fareed
Haifa, Syria, July 29, 1909.

Through His Honor Mrza Ahmad Ameen Fareed to the maid-servant of God, Mrs. True. (Upon her be Baha'o'llah!)

HE IS GOD!

O daughter of the Kingdom!

The epistle was received and the Convention of the delegates of the Mashrekel-Azkar on the day of Naurooz, at Chicago; proved a cause of joy and gladness. In reality, a wonderful coincidence has taken place. In that blessed day Abdu'l-Baha hastened to Haifa and with the divine friends was present at the Supreme Station (The Tomb of the Bab). The pure body of His Holiness, the Supreme (The Bab), after sixty years of homeless wandering and placelessness, was established on Mt. Carmel, the mountain of the Lord, in the Supreme Station, and in Chicago there was held (at the same time) the Convention of the delegates of the Mashrek-el-Azkar and Mr. Charles Haney and Mrs. Miriam Haney arrived in Chicago and were present in that holy meeting.

I beg of God that that radiant Assembly may become aided in pure, truthful intentions and confirmed in the service of the Kingdom, so that it may be a sample of the Assemblages of the Supreme Concourse.

The Persian philosopher has said: "That which is above has its likeness below."

As to the land, you must carry out the agreement you made with the land owner, so that it may be purchased. But payment by payment, it should be done, and, if possible, commence the building of the Mashrek-el-Azkar. Delay not.

In the law of God, men and women are equal in all rights save in the Universal House of Justice; for the Chairman and the members of the House of Justice are men according to the Text of the Book. Aside from this, in all the rest of the Associations, like the Convention for the building of the Mashrek-el-Azkar, the Assembly of Teaching, the Spiritual Assembly, Philanthropic Associations Scientific Association, men and women are co-partners in all the rights.

Upon thee be Baha-el-ABHA!

Dear Mr Rabbani, I have to admit that I am "Nashi" :)))

by Tahirih on

According to our reza 41 I am a Nashi , even after 19 years of being a bahai! first I thought 19 years qualifies me, but sir, have to admit that just dealing with these serpents for 19 years has not been enough to know what kind of cannibal I am dealing with.

I guess for Iranian bahais who are 3rd or more generation bahais and having suffered generation after generation by the hand of Reza 41 kind, their tricks are more transparent;)))

But we new " B''s can hold our grounds well too, remember we have come from them:)))

Anyway, sir , I appreciate your advice, and reza 41 can go to his " marjaee taghlid" for his  further questions:))))

Most regards for you,

Tahirih

Ahang Rabbani

on laws

by Ahang Rabbani on

Dear Tahirih,

I fear that you’ve walked into a standard trick by these Qom seminarians, like Reza41 (who should be completely ignored, no matter what he writes or says).  Their trick is to demand that Baha’is justify this or that law of Baha’u’llah.

The problem is no religious law can ever be defended or rationalized (though a lot of ignorant people do that).  For instance, how can we ever rationalized Muhammad’s injunction for fasting during the month of Ramadan?  It can’t be done.  It was his wish for people to fast for the entire month – and no more, or less – and that’s the end of it.  Or obligatory prayer (namaz) 5 times a day.  There’s no rational explanation (despite the fact that those ignorant seminarians in Qom waste a lifetime coming up with all sorts of idiotic explanations which completely defy logic).

This cannot be done in any religion, nor is needed.  That is, once a person recognizes the author of Revelation as the being from God, then everything revealed by him is by definition God’s desire for mankind.

Baha’u’llah explains this in the opening passage of his Kitab Aqdas:

"The first duty prescribed by God for His servants is the recognition of Him Who is the Dayspring of His Revelation and the Fountain of His laws, Who representeth the Godhead in both the Kingdom of His Cause and the world of creation. Whoso achieveth this duty hath attained unto all good; and whoso is deprived thereof hath gone astray, though he be the author of every righteous deed. It behoveth every one whoreacheth this most sublime station, this summit of transcendent glory, to observe every ordinance of Him Who is the Desire of the world. These twin duties are inseparable. Neither is acceptable without the other. Thus hath it been decreed by Him Who is the Source of Divine inspiration."

In this passage, Baha’u’llah explains that man has two duties:  (1) to recognize the Prophet of God for the age, and (2) to obey all his commands.

Once the first step is achieved, that is, one recognizes that Baha’u’llah is the same spirit that propelled Moses, Zoroaster, Christ, Muhammad, Brahma, the Bab, and other Prophets to edify and educate humanity on morality and goodness, then everything else follows.

Instead, people like Reza41 want you to skip the first step and have to rationalize the laws, knowing perfectly well that it can’t be done.  As an example, ask him why should a person pay khums?  And why should it be 20%, and not 19% or 21%?  He can’t answer because there’s no answer.  Or what fast in Ramadan, and not in Rajab?  Again, no answer as there’s none.  As Baha’u’llah states, “He doeth what He willeth, and ordaineth what He pleaseth.”

Best wishes.

Tahirih

Reza 41 , I have been a bahai for 19 years!!

by Tahirih on

so if I appear " Nashi" to you it is due to your eloquent tongue and highly evolved communication skills:)))

Any way lets go back to the concept of dowry in Bahai faith:

With the Revelation of Bahá'u'lláh many familiar concepts, customs and institutions are defined and take on new meaning.
One of these is the dowry.
The institution of dowry is a very ancient practice in many
cultures and takes many forms. In some countries it is a payment  made by the parents of the bride to the groom; in others  it is a payment made by the groom to the parents of the bride, called a"bride-price".
In both such cases the amount is often quite considerable.
The law of Bahá'u'lláh abolishes all such variants and
converts the dowry into a symbolic act whereby the groom presents  a gift of a certain limited value to the bride.
For city-dwellers at nineteen mithqáls of pure gold, and for
village-dwellers at the same amount in silver.

Bahaullah specifies that "Whoso wisheth to increase this sum, it is forbidden him to exceed the limit of ninty-five mithqals", He also adds that it is prefered to have dowry at a lower level.
When he was asked about dowery he answered that :

"Whatever is revealed in the Bayán, in respect to those residing in
cities and villages, is approved and should be carried out. However, in
the Kitáb-i-Aqdas mention is made of the lowest level. The intention is
nineteen mithqáls of silver, specified in the Bayán for
village-dwellers. This is more pleasing unto God, provided the two
parties agree. The purpose is to promote the comfort of all, and to
bring about concord and union among the people
. Therefore, the
greater the consideration shown in these matters the better it will be . . . "

So Reza 41, all this gold and silver hoopla that your are having here, is to decrease dowry to a symbolic gesture, and abolishing paying high prices for marrying someone. he has simplified old and hindering  practises. he has increased status of women from a property to be bought by money to an equal partner in marriage.

when I got married , we agreed that even though I was from city, to have19 mithqal of silver for my dowry.

See I told you , start another subject , this one is too easy :))))

a response

by Ahang Rabbani on

Dear “TheMrs”,

You are right that no religion, or school of thought, should be judged ahistorically.  For us to suggest (astaghfuru’llah!) that Prophet Muhammad committed a misdeed by marrying a young girl would be reading our 21st century morality back into 7th century society and that would be wrong.  So, you and I completely agree on this point (as I’ve understood your position).

That is precisely why Abdu’l-Baha’s ruling was completely ahead of his time and progressive for his time, when no woman had any right anywhere in the world.  As I mentioned, the most progressive of nations, the United States, did not legislate women suffrage until 1920.  Iran came in 43 years later and of course today, thanks to Mullas ruling our beautiful country, they have taken us back to the dark middle ages.

However, as to you main point as to why women are excluded from service on the Universal House of Justice, I have no answer, nor does anyone else.  As Baha’is, we accept Abdu’l-Baha’s assurance that the reason for this will become known in the future and patiently wait for that day.  Meanwhile, we recognize the high station given to women in Baha’i thought and society, such as, giving girls and women priority to education as they will be the first educators of children, and many other priorities to women.

To sum, as a Baha’i, I readily admit that I don’t know why Abdu’l-Baha excluded women from this particular service, but I’m delighted that the Baha’i teachings insist so strongly for the promotion of women in all aspects of our society.

Regards.

So now what is the problem

by AP (not verified) on

Why not make a new law and include Women in the UHJ. As per Mr. Ahang Rabbani the women were given rights to vote in bahai elections in 1953 so now its 2009 they must be given chance to become a member of UHJ. I am sure they will work as efficiently as the Men. Only then the equality between men and women will be established.

TheMrs

Ahang Rabbani, Please

by TheMrs on

Ahang Rabbani, Please clarify a few things for me. Back in the day, the idea of women's suffrage was progressive and revolutionary and indeed, since some intellectuals and religious leaders were enlightened and thought fairly and ahead of their times. However, that does not justify why membership to the highest ranks is still make dominated. In other words, if we are to judge progression based on a snap shot in time, or to judge rules and regulation based on when they were established, surely you must agree that it would apply to all religions. In other words, today, I shouldn't think that Mohammad was a child molester because marrying a 9 year old was ok back then. I just don't see the logic here.

Furthermore, whatever the intention of this blogger may have been, I don't hold any religion to a higher standard, I contend that all religions are the same. And so, no one has anything to be emabrassed about. We should be proud that we come from a place with all sorts of world views. Even if some of them are wrong or not liberal enough.

Abdu'l-Baha's progressive ideas

by Ahang Rabbani on

The purpose of this blog posting by the fake name Ravian Bilani (a play on the name of Kavian Milani) is to embarrass the Baha’i community and to present it as backward and against progressive ideas.  It has failed in this objective for the following considerations:

Women suffrage has an honored and important history.  When Abdu’l-Baha was writing on this issue, women in the United States did not have the right to participate in any election.  It was not until some years later in 1920 that finally women were given their right to vote in the United States.  Therefore, by granting right to women to vote and to be elected to all local and national Baha’i institutions, Abdu’l-Baha is demonstrating the progressive ideas of the Baha’i Faith long before the rest of society caught up with him.

In Iran, it was not until 1963, many decades after Abdu’l-Baha, when women were given the right to elect and be elected.  By comparison, the women were given the right to vote and be elected to Baha’i Assemblies from 1953, a whole decade before the rest of the nation.

Abdu’l-Baha’s ideas for his time were extremely progressive and that’s just matter of established history.  Any other characterization is simply based on prejudice and ignorance, which we have plenty of on Iranian.com and among characters posting on this blog.

Translation

by Ahang Rabbani on

A couple of folks have dismissed this translation because it is not by Shoghi Effendi.  This objection is unfounded and there's nothing in Baha'i writings that limits translation to those prepared by Shoghi Effendi.

At any rate, translation is not the point here and the main point is Abdu'l-Baha's Tablet, which is authentic and even though the posted translation is old and a better translation is available now, it is an accurate rendering by Dr. Fareed.

I also like to register an exception to attacks on David M.  He is a devoted Baha'i in Europe and his faith should not be questioned.

UHJ: Amazing, Humble Men

by Believer (not verified) on

The Teachings of the Baha'i Faith outline a form of ethical, moral behavior that is unconcerned with power for power's sake. This is diametrical to the fashion of the present day where most people in urbanized society have been taught to seek personal power or precedence, often at the expense of others in society.

The Universal House of Justice is the supreme elected body of the Baha'i Faith. It issues guidance, not directive. However, many highly influential appointed and elected positions exist within the Baha'i Administration and are held by many women. In many places through out the world, women actually predominate in the Baha'i Administrative Order.

Since the Baha'i Faith continues to grow in leaps and bounds, women not serving on the Universal House does not appear to be a stumbling block to feminine partipation. in fact, every Baha'i woman who votes in Baha'i elections is particpating in the eventual election of the Universal House, held every five years.

see for yourself what the character of the UHJ is at
//info.bahai.org/universal-house-of-justice.h...

My point is, the Universal House of Justice staffed as it is by such amazing, humble men, is openly dependent on Baha'i women thoughout the world.

It seems that the person who posted this is only interested in creating suspicion. "Ravian Bilani" is famous for blogging mostly to and from himself, ad nauseum.

Reza41 is our brother and an Iranian - see what Hazrati valiyyi Amrolleh has said about islam and its teachings :

"As to Muhammad, the Apostle of God, let none among His followers who read these pages, think for a moment that either Islam, or its Prophet, or His Book, or His appointed Successors, or any of His authentic teachings, have been, or are to be in any way, or to however slight a degree, disparaged."

... not absolutely. See every religion has some negative and some positive teachings. In Baha'i faith we have very little negative points as compared to other religions. Free will and freedom of conscience are matters that Douglas Martin then member of the UHJ has commented on:
"We have inherited a dangerous delusion from Christianity that our individual conscience is supreme. This is not a Baha'i belief. In the end, in the context of both our role in the community and our role in the greater world, we must be prepared to sacrifice our personal convictions or opinions. The belief that individual conscience is supreme is equivalent to "taking partners with God" which is abhorrent to the Teachings of the Faith."

Mr. Alborz ; You'd better curb your desire for free will and conscience if you truly want to tow the UHJ's party line.

After all as councillor Rebecca Murphy mentioned at the US National convention:

"We don't want to be those people who want to see God with their
own eyes, or hear His melody with their own ears, because we
have been given the gift of being able to see through the eyes of
the House of Justice and listen through the ears of the House of
Justice."

There are'nt enough hours in a day for you to get to everything that is coming your way.

I stand by my "assertion" that David M. provided a rationalization that is at great odds with the Writings on this subject.   Quite simply, to provide one is pure conjecture.  So far, he also has made no follow up comments.

Unlike your attempts at rationalizing Islam, no rationalization is warranted here, nor has any ever been offered by anyone that has an understanding of this mystery.

So, I suggest that you get back to work as you have a lot more rationalization to catch up on.

Wow, Agh Reza41 you have found a gold mine except that it is full of fools gold.
All fair minded people know the type of equality you offer to women as the alternative and are gathering a million signature to reject it. The funny part is that they are all moslems. The most shameful treatment of women happens in your neck of the wood. You cant make Islam look any better, with what you are doing.

Men and woman are equal but different. And some of the provisions mentioned above are based on the concept of differentiation mostly of biological nature and not equality.
To see things to be only black and white makes comprehension of dynamic concepts impossible.
That is exactly the issue with islamic societies, they are founded on the basis of black and white thinking since most people 1400 years had thought process only compatible with such.
That is the area we need to work on.

As far as the issue of Universal house of justice's membership, Adib aziz has summed it up.

we, as bahais have absolute trust in Abdulbaha therefore in a spirit of deep faith, confident that there is a divine guidance and wisdom behind it (which will be gradually unfolded to the eyes of the world) accept his guidance .

As a woman , an ex-Muslim, I see bahai faith absolutely a progressive faith, I do not feel discriminated against  at all. I have the privilege to be a member of our administration from local to national and international level. I have the same rights as my husband, even more. Since if we had enough means to send one of our children to school according to bahai laws it should be our daughter.

women in house of justice

by ab111 (not verified) on

Are in Bahai teachings women equal to men?
Quotes from aqdas, the holiest Bahai book inspired by Bahaullah:
18-Women during their monthly cycle are exempted from saying prayers. Instead after ablution they should repeat 95 times Allah-u-Abha.
32-Women are forbidden from pilgrimage to holy shrines.
20-Inheritance-Children 9 shares, wife 8, father 7, mother 6, brother 5, sister 4, teachers 3.
25-Residential house will be inherited by the male offspring. If the family does not have a son it will not be inherited by daughter, but rather the house will belong to the House of Justice.
63-Man can marry two wives, but for tranquility he may be content with one wife. He who takes into his service a maid may do so with propriety.
68-After one year of separation man can divorce his wife or decide to go back together. One month after divorce man can remarry his wife.
107-Step son is forbidden from marrying his step mother.
(Instead of saying step mother is forbidden marrying her step son)
One of the 12 principles of Abdul Baha is equality of man and woman. But at his direction women are forbidden from membership in the Universal House of Justice.
In 1909 Mrs.Corinne True in a letter to Abdul Baha asked him to reconsider the decision and allow women to become members in the UHJ. Abdul Baha's response was in the negative(No).
It appears that in marriage, divorce, inheritance and also in the high administrative posts man is the active participle.

PS-Elephant in the Room

by sophia on

PS. Adib, have you ever considered that maybe the reason why this issue keeps coming up is precisely because it is the "Elephant in the Room" of the Baha'i faith?    Also, Alborz, do you realize that you have (as The Mrs has quite rightly picked up) in broad daylight basically just told a member OF YOUR OWN FAITH to shut up about this issue, and subtly implied there may be consequences?
