Around 200 Aryashahr
by Anonymousb (not verified) on Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:49 PM CSTAround 200 Aryashahr residents in Tehran reacted angrily, after a girl who was stopped by the Islamic Guidance units for inappropriate Hejab, resisted arrest. The Guidance units started beating up the young girl when she started resisting arrest and their brutality stirred the crowds who came to the girl's rescue.
Islamic Guidance units, faced with angry protests, drove away from the scene in a hurry, forgetting to take one of their colleagues, who was duly set on by the angry protesters. As the crowds got bigger and bigger, they started shouting "Islamic Government, We don't want, we don't want" which can be clearly heard on the youtube clip.
Watch the people spontaneously shout "Islamic Government, We don't want, we don't want, we don't want"

Re-Daryush comment in Ben Madadi's article
by Anonymous, (not verified) on Sun Feb 24, 2008 05:19 AM CSTIn a vain attempt in absolving their Islamist system of its naked barbarity Islamists like this Daryush chap who hides behind a national icon put the onus on the victims, the people of Iran. Psychopathic criminal logic of “she made me do it” is an old demagogic argument.

lines 5 thru 8 are very interesting in meaning, comparing names on classroom board to be tapped on but the actual persons beaten instead by the stick.

by Penny (not verified) on Sat Feb 23, 2008 11:23 PM CSTدشت بيفرهنگی ما
هر ز تمومه الفهاش
I have listen to the song tens on times. In the tenth line, it is:
"علف" = grass
not
"الف"
I believe:
"هر زه" = weed
not
"هر ز" = corrupt, wasted, lewdness, futile, empty
I believe the 9th and 10th line:
"دشت بيفرهنگی ما
هر زه تمومه علفهاش
"Our uncultured plains
all weed instead of grass"
It makes sense if the poet sees the 'uncultured' part of the society being overgrown with 'weed'.
Thank you for your help,
third line...
by Anonymous trans (not verified) on Sat Feb 23, 2008 10:29 PM CSTthird line probably has a deeper meaning... Referring to the wooden stick which is meant to be used as a pointer to point to alphabet (lessons) on classroom board is used instead to (illegitimately) discipline students.
leading to the fourth line that probably leads to sigh and "boghz", where boghz can mean hatred, but here probably means the state where the throat swells when children are scared and about to cry (sorry I can't find an equivalent english word for it).

by Peer O'Kachal (not verified) on Sat Feb 23, 2008 10:28 PM CSTLiterally speaking you are correct. However, as you may know, Persian is seldom that straight forward in its poetry and language. "Choob e Alef" may be translated as you put it, but in the context of this poem, it really means the rule of authority that has been over our heads, controlling us, and making sure any wrong doings are punishable using this "choob e alef". The same thing that teachers use to punish unruly children. I used cane to mean "shallagh", not meaning "alaf" or grass. Stick, lash, whip etc can replace cane.

"چوب الف بر سر ما
"الف"
means 'thousand'. Also the first letter of alphabet 'A'.
"علف"
means cane
"چوب"
means 'wood'.
Is this the wooden stick that teachers use to point to the letter 'A' on the blackboard, also used to beat unbehaving students?
Why is this line translated as: "A thousand headed lash/cane has been over our heads" ?
What happened to:
"چوب"
"wood"?
Shouldn't this line be translated as: "a thousand wooden stickes beating on our heads" ?
Thank you for your help. I am trying to become versed in Persian/Farsi.

by Peer O'Kachal (not verified) on Sat Feb 23, 2008 08:49 PM CSTA rough translation (a highly political song)
My dear school friend
You are with me and my companion
A thousand headed lash/cane has been over our heads
You are my grudge and my sigh
Our names have been engraved
On the body of this blackboard
Legacy of oppression and injustice
Is still remaining on our bodies
The uncultured part of our civilization
Has lost all the weed in amongst its foliage
Whether they were Good
Or whether they were bad
Their hearts are now dead
Yours and my hands must now
Tear away these curtains
Who can, other than you and I
Soothe our pains?
My dear school friend
You are with me and my companion
A thousand headed lash/cane has been over our heads
You are my grudge and my sigh
Our names have been engraved
On the body of this blackboard

The song plays on emotions .... It reminds me of the first "Islamic Revolutionary" song that got a lot of people excited ...
I do not like that one single line :

Overly emotional ... people ... بيفرهنگی
