THEOCRACY ON SCREEN: Xavier Beauvois' "Of Gods and Men"

Loosely based on the Tibhirine tragedy, in which a brotherhood of monks in Algeria were kidnapped and slaughtered by Islamic fundamentalists in opposition of the government, [the film] attempts to put audiences in the sandals of those impoverished martyrs during their final weeks. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes for director Xavier Beauvois starring: Lambert Wilson, Michael Lonsdale and Olivier Rabourdin.
Although Islamists were initially accused of the massacre, subsequent investigation and contradictory testimonies were soon to suspect the Algerian government as responsible of the massacre. However to this day mystery over the exact circumstances as well as those responsible for the murder remains unsolved.

Plot:
Amonastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. Eight FrenchChristian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers. When a crew offoreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweepsthough the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse.Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowlyrealize that they have no choice but to stay... come what may. This film isloosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from1993 until their kidnapping in 1996.
