Thanks for the
by skatermom (not verified) on Mon Aug 25, 2008 03:33 PM PDTThanks for the clarification. I told my mom and khaleh last night and they were much more impressed by Grace Kelly. My mother said and I quote: "I had a hard time believing that the Shah would be attracted to that woman from Big Valley".
It was Grace Kelly Not Barbara Stanwyck
by Darius Kadivar on Sun Aug 24, 2008 02:57 PM PDTTo my knowledge your mother may have meant Grace Kelly. The Shah courted her before she married Prince Rainier of Monaco and after the Shah had divorced from Soraya.
Grace Kelly was very fond of the Shah and they remained great friends. In a biography on Richard Burton, the latter was surprised to see Grace Kelly Defend the Shah staunchly at a priivate dinner. She got angry and Burton for critisizing the Shah for the Persepolis ceremonies. When the Shah was in exile Kelly and Prince Rainier wanted the Royal family to come to Monaco but the Shah did not want to create problems for the Monaco family and we know the rest of the story : He died in Egypt.
Here Grace Kelly introduces a film for Unesco about the Efforts of Iran to fight Opium Traffic during the Shah's era. The film was directed by Terrence Young one of the directors of the James Bond Films :

My mother told me a rumor once that the Shah was also in love with Barbara Stanwyck. Is this true? Or is she making things up?

by Darius Kadivar on Sat Aug 23, 2008 01:46 AM PDTThe film was not censored in Iran but it was not publicized either. Some requirements were also imposed on the movie director and producers not to have any "shocking scenes" that could be regarded as sexual scenes, like kissing on the lips or be held in the arms of a male protagonist. But the directors still managed to get around with it. The film is actually three seperate stories in which soraya portays three different woman, one of whome being Princess Soraya herself ( and she speaks a few words in Persian).
The critics and partners on the film found she was actually very good as an actress and saw her as the "new Grace Kelly". But she did not continue the experience except in a small cameo role in a film called "She" with Ursulla Andress in the title role and she plays a club dancer. This film must have been censored in Iran because she was not playing a very glamorous part. But there was nothing particularly shocking in her performance or about the movie itself.
Too bad we may have missed a great Movie Star otherwise. She sure was photogenic.
sorya and the shah
by Mehdi Mazloom on Fri Aug 22, 2008 02:31 PM PDTDidn't the Shah tried to stop the Movie from being released to the public?. She was the love of his life (at least that is the prevailing story around town).
