IMF: Eurozone 'key risk' to China

IMF: Eurozone 'key risk' to China (bbc)

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the worsening debt crisis in the eurozone poses a "key risk" to China's growth.

The IMF added that China also faces domestic risks, not least from a sharper-than-anticipated decline in the property market.

However, the fund said China had ample room and the fiscal tools "to respond forcefully" to any such developments.

Growth in China's economy slowed to a three-year low in the second quarter.

Its economy expanded at an annualised rate of 7.6% in the three months to the end of June.

The fund said that it expects China's economy to grow by 8% in the current financial year, but warned that a lack of response to the deteriorating crisis in the eurozone, may cut that number by half.

"The main external risk continues to be spillovers to China from a worsening of the euro area crisis," the fund said.

"Assuming no policy response in China, growth could decline by as much as four percentage points in response to a one and three quarter percentage point slowdown in global growth."

The eurozone is a key market for Chinese exports and the fear is that if the debt crisis escalates it may dent consumer sentiment and demand, resulting in slowing exports to the region.

COLONIALISM ? Some fear China is becoming Africa's new master

by Darius Kadivar on

Chinese Colonialism? (bbc) by Damian Grammaticas Beijing correspondent

Is China becoming Africa's new colonial master? Is Beijing sucking away resources to drive its own economic growth, while offering little in return?

Or is such talk the product of fear and envy? Is it a sign of Western anxieties, that China is fast becoming the new power in Africa, building more equal relationships, and undermining Western influence on the continent?

China is certainly a real force in Africa. Just look at the clutch of presidents and the officials from many more parts of Africa who have made the long trek to Beijing this week for the China-Africa Co-operation Forum.

The visitors certainly have incentives to be here. They are being showered with attention, feted at banquets and tantalised with the prospect of preferential loan deals.

I remember

The Shah was fascinated by the Persian fluency of the Chinses interpreter. I remember that in a press conference held during the Chinese chairman's visit, when the Shah was asked a question in Persian by a Chinses reporter, he told the reporter:"before I answer your question I would like to ask you where did you learn Persian so beautifully." The rperter asnwered: "in the People's School of International Languages!"
