'Abdul Baha Says about Africans
by Covenant
05-Jan-2009

'Abdu'l-Baha says about native Africans:

"The inhabitants of a country life Africa are all as wandering
savages and wild animals. They lack intelligence and knowledge; all are
uncivilized; not one civilized and a wise man is not to be found among
them. These are the proofs of the wise men. The prophets also
acknowledge this opinion, towit: That education hath a great effect
upon the human race, but they declare that minds and comprehensions are
originally different. And this matter is self-evident; it cannot be
refuted. We see that certain children of the same age, nativity and
race, nay, from the same household, under the tutorship of one teacher,
differ in their minds and conprehensions. One advanceth rapidly,
another is slow in catching the rays of culture, still another
remaineth in the lowest degree of stupidity. No matter how much the
shell is educated (or polished), it can never become a radiant pearl.
The black stone will not become the world-illumined gem." (Tablets of
'Abdu'l-Baha p.567 vv.3-4)

Here are the FACTS:

*Both Baha'i Founders (The Bab and Baha'u'llah) bought and sold black
SLAVES! These were not merely "servants' or hired help. They were
SLAVES!

*Abdu'l-Baha believed that Africans were "savages" who were lower than animals in temperment and intelligence.

*Baha'is believe and teach that Jesus never arose from the dead, but is
still buried in Jerusalem, and the Bible and Gospels are full of myths
and errors.

*Baha'is believe and taught that Baha'u'llah is the "SUPREME Manifestation of God"; much superior to Jesus or Muhammad!

*Shoghi Effendi taught that the Jews were persecuted for 2,000 years
(including the Holocaust) because they persecuted Christ for 3 years.

*The Baha'is have converted almost 100,000 African-Americans, and
perhaps 1 MILLION black Africans, by proclaiming it is the first
"racist free" religion!

*The Baha'is have started the "Institute for the Healing of Racism"
that works with the NAACP, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, and
other such organizations to promote "healing from racism".

Don't let them get away with that BIG LIE!

Joey, African Baha'is and Baha'is of African descent....

by alborz on

... do NOT share much of the conclusions or characterization. I recommend that you read my earlier response that provides ample examples of distinguished Baha'is that committed their lives to the promotion and service to this Faith.  Their chief source of inspiration was Abdu'l Baha, the Perfect Exemplar of its principles.  In his travels to the US, in 1912, he promoted the teachings of this Faith and encouraged the union of mixed races amongst the Baha'is.  When you question a remark, we seek confirmatory and discomfimatory evidence.  There exists no confirmatory evidence to support the conclusions promoted in this blog and yet there is much evidence to the contrary.

This blog simply points to an intent, or "gharaz", to harm.  That is all. No more. No less.  Your view on this subject would not have evoked the responses posted here, as they were "considered" and without intent.  Again, seeking confirmation and disconfirmation to reach a conclusion, is the best approach and this blogger knows nothing of it.

A fair reading of the tablet

by Joey (not verified) on

The quote is not false. Two people have linked to the same webpage. That page has the same quote as the author.

A fair reading of the tablet reveals some thoughts that we today consider racist. Let us be honest: He IS calling Africans stupid.

Abdulbaha is saying this is not because of race but the value of education. This was probably a very liberal and progressive thing in his time. He should get credit for this. In fairness his assumptions are not politically correct by today's standard.

Do not legitimize lunacy

by samsam1111 on

The same way I diffrentiate between Ommatism & Islam(as a private religion of many) , there is a difference between a half-breed Ommati & a true Iranian . Ommatism & all it,s sub classes doesn,t even equate to Islam in full form . Religious intolerance is only one of the many side effects of Ommatist mind, propagated, on a free thinking, free spirited true Iranic psyche for 13 centuries . Ignore the ignorant  ;

Save the world , feed the hungry, ignore the angry & educate the idiot.

Recognizing falsehood from truth...

by alborz on

... is a challenge that we all face in our daily lives.  While it is easy to fabricate and attribute falsehood, diligence and patience is required to refute them.  Those that wish to refer to Baha'i Writings  are welcomed to do so. Those that wish to look at the evidence given below are also welcomed to do so.  You investigate and then decide for yourself.

The claims and conclusion made in the blog are so unfounded and proposterous in their representation that only a cursory review of not only the Baha'i Writings as referenced by Tahirih, Mona and Faryar, would dispell such allegations but examples of dedicated Baha'is of African descent that have been both appointed and elected into exemplary roles of service to the Baha'i Faith should hopefully leave no room for any conjecture that the claims and allegations are utterly false and fabricated.

Hands of the Cause of God, a title given to a group of believers that served the Baha'i Community and advised the elected institutions, included Enoch Olinga from Uganda.  Another Hand of the Cause of God was Louis G. Gregory, an African American from South Carolina, one of most beloved members of the Baha’i Faith, who dedicated himself to the Oneness of Mankind.

Would Enoch Olinga and Louis Gregory have served this Faith in this capacity if the alleged characterizations were true?

Kaiser Barnes, an African American, was elected to become a member of the Universal House of Justice, the supreme governing body of the Baha’i Community.  He was first elected in 2000 and then re-elected in 2003 and 2008.

Would Kaiser Barnes continue to serve in this capacity if the alleged characterizations were true?

Robert C. Henderson, an African American, was the Secretary General of the Spritiual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States, after Glenford E. Mitchell, a Jamaican American, who was elected to the Universal House of Justice in 1982. .  Mr. Henderson, continues to serve on the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States and Mr. Mitchell retired, in 2008, after serving 26 years as a member of the Universal House of Justice.

Would Glenford Mitchell and Robert Henderson have served this Faith so prominently if the alleged characterizations were true?

The above examples were chosen to simply indicate that these individuals were or are well-informed and educated and are embodiments of the Oneness of Mankind which is exemplified in the community of this Faith's believers. There is no inconsistency and no contradiction between what is believed and what is practiced; which is a far cry from what we observe around us today.

What a creepy blogger you are, full of hate!  If this gets your rocks off, go for it creepo!  I will ignore you henceforth.  Before I go, though, I should tell you that you should be ashamed of yourself.  Whoever you are, you cannot be a true Iranian.  True Iranians love all Iranians.  I love and respect my Bahaii compatriots.  You, on the other hand, can go fly a kite, Covenant!

DISTORTIONS; CHEAP SHOT

by faryarm on

'COVENANT'

You are nothing but a new descendant of a long series of discredited people who have  tried to discredit this new Faith, by age old tactics of lies and distortions.

Who ever you are, only you know in your heart know your reasons for your outrageous display of animosity and malice, and for that you will be eternally responsible and accountable.

Your DISTORTIONS and tactics, are nothing new

Actions of Baha'u'llah, Abdul Baha and Shoghi Effendi , their daily conduct

speak louder than all of the efforts of their enemies.

If there was a SINGLE LIE in this faith it would not have flourished.

The Truth always prevails, that is why people like you, from the highest living Monarchs and religious leaders of Baha'u'llah's time , the power hungry and ambitious follower to the average misguided person like you; have all failed and ultimately faded away, often in the most miserable manner.Where are your descendant now? Has any of their efforts to ridicule,  demean, distort succeeded?

1. Your use of a totally unrelated picture of africans has no relation to the subject or any connection to Abdul Baha or Bahais.

2. Your use of questionable quotes without reference to authentic Bahai writings. (Many handwritten Bahai Tablets were stolen and distorted by in an effort to discredit Abdul Baha)

3. Early talks by Abdul Baha, were written down and loosley translated

and can not be trusted as authentic writings.

In answer to

*Both Baha'i Founders (The Bab and Baha'u'llah) bought and sold black

This is simply not true. The persian concept of servants can not be seen in the same cruel fashion as in the west. These servants, although some were of African origin, were brought over by Portuguese traders between 1502–1736.

In Iran, in the 19th century servants , lived and served as part of the household; In general, They were NEVER, bought and sold and mistreated  as purchased SLAVES were in the west.

*Abdu'l-Baha believed that Africans were "savages" who were lower than animals in temperment and intelligence.

Abdul Baha believed NO SUCH THING, during his trip to AmericaHe spoke against racism and actively encouraged marriage between the races. In New York, he refused to continue to stay at a hotel that did not allow "negroes".

*Baha'is believe and teach that Jesus never arose from the dead, but is
still buried in Jerusalem, and the Bible and Gospels are full of myths
and errors.

Bahais do not subscribe to a literal meaning of the Resurrection of Christ , but attribute a deeper spiritual meaning and significance to the concept- please refer to Some Answered Questions.

*Baha'is believe and taught that Baha'u'llah is the "SUPREME Manifestation of God"; much superior to Jesus or Muhammad!

Bahais belive that each Manifestation of God has brought a new and more complete message from God according to the needs  and exigencies of the day...

By "Supreme"it is meant the most Complete so far!

Other wise  they are all from One source... they should all be revered because They Each were the Mouth piece of God to humanity.

*Shoghi Effendi taught that the Jews were persecuted for 2,000 years
(including the Holocaust) because they persecuted Christ for 3 years.

If Shoghi effendi  said such a thing, where is the documented source, and if he did say that...he is not the only to have said that in history. Who knows the reason for such atrocities, only time and wisdom will tell..

*The Baha'is have converted almost 100,000 African-Americans, and
perhaps 1 MILLION black Africans, by proclaiming it is the first
"racist free" religion!

Yes there are many African Bahais, why dont you ask them why they became Bahais, and if indeed they feel the absence of any racism in The ACTION Of the Bahais, not just words.

*The Baha'is have started the "Institute for the Healing of Racism"
that works with the NAACP, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, and
other such organizations to promote "healing from racism".

Don't let them get away with that BIG LIE!

The "BIG LIE" is the lack of substance and your malicious attempt to demean the Bahais.

As always the record shows differently, as ACTIONS speak louder than words..DiSTORTED or NOT.

Dear Mona,

by Souri on

You are just too kind honey. The best thing is to ignore this insulting blog all together. This will be a good lesson for those indecent person for not posting idiocies with the profanity and insulting pictures anymore.

If anyone has any question, they will keep it for asking later in a civil debate about Bahai's faith or even they can open their own respectful blog. If you continue the discussion under this hateful climate, you will only legalize this kind of blog and they will continue hurting Bahai people more and more.

Respectfully,

Dear Want to know ...

by Mona 19 on

Here is the Tablet

O ye beloved of God and maid-servants of the Merciful!

The republic of wise men believes that the difference in minds and opinions is due to the difference of education and the acquisition of ethics. That is, that minds are equal in origin, but education and the acquisition of ethics cause minds to differ and comprehensions to be at variance; that this difference is not in entity but in education and teaching; that there is no individual distinction for any soul.

Hence, the members of the human race all possess the capacity of attaining to the highest station, and the proof they adduce therefor is this: “The inhabitants of a country like Africa are all as wandering savages and wild animals; they lack intelligence and knowledge; all are uncivilized; not one civilized and wise man is to be found among them. On the contrary, consider the civilized countries, the inhabitants of which are living in the highest state of culture and ethics, solidarity and inter-dependence; possessing, with few exceptions, acute power of comprehensions and sound mind.

Therefore, it is made clear and evident that the superiority and inferiority of minds and comprehensions arises from education and cultivation, or from their lack and absence. A bent branch is straightened by training and the wild fruit of the jungle is made the product of the orchard. An ignorant man by learning becomes knowing, and the world of savagery, through the bounty of a wise educator, is changed into a civilized kingdom. The sick is healed by medication, and the poor man, by learning the arts of commerce, is made rich. The follower, by attaining the virtues of the leader, becomes great, and the lowly man, by the education of the teacher, rises from the nadir of oblivion to the zenith of celebrity.”

to be continued ...

Mona,

The blogger has a direct quote from Abdu’l-Baha with page number, (Tablets of 'Abdu'l-Baha p.567 vv.3-4), do you know about this text? Is this true or not? Is this an accurate translation or not?

I believe all religions are flawed, so one person trying to prove another religion is flawed has no bearing on me, and I know this blogger is looking at this issue from a hateful point of view, but I was wondering about the text. Please refrain from sugar coating you answer, if you care to reply. Thank you.

I thought Bahaullah had

by Fortune Teller (not verified) on

I thought Bahaullah had envisioned the future and had given vision of the 21st century back in 19th century and their followers in this website told us so many quotes and youtube videos about his prophecy and scientific teachings that are proof beyond a reasonable doubt, heck NO doubt none whatsoever.

This doesn't seem like he knew what he was talking about?

Mona 19

You're full of lies and hate

by Mona 19 on

(1)Feizeh and Mobarak were The Bab ‘s household servents/helpers ..NOT SLAVES.

In the Book of Aqdas Bahá’u’lláh forbids slavery, and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá has explained that not only chattel slavery, but also industrial slavery, is contrary to the law of God.

(2)Abdul baha says “God maketh no distinction between the white and the black. If the hearts are pure both are acceptable unto Him. God is no respecter of persons on account of either color or race….. In the sight of God colour makes no difference at all, He looks at the hearts of men. That which God desires from men is the heart. A black man with a good character is far superior to a white man with a character that is less good."

"….verily the faces of these are as the pupil of the eye; although the pupil is created black, yet it is the source of light…"

(3) Bahá'u'lláh says all of the Manifestations of God have the same metaphysical nature and the same spiritual station. There is absolute equality among them. No one of Them is superior to another….he explained that the differences which exist between the teachings of the various Manifestations of God are not due to any differences in stature or level of importance, but only to the varying needs and capacities of the civilizations to which They appeared.

Covenent, Don't you think we

by desi on

Covenent,

Don't you think we have bigger fish to fry with everything that's going on this world?  You're suggesting that we not let "Bahais get away with a big lie".  Boro baba.  Beekari.  Under this logic shouldn't we hold Jews, Muslims and Christians accountable for hypocrisies written in their holy books. You're hoping we  all take breaks from our everyday struggles to protest the erections of nonsensical centers.  Let's start with the Majlis building in Tehran.
