Writing about Ali Mahin Torabi made me realize the difficulty of passing a simple message to Iranians in Diaspora. Today when I read these comments about the interview of Daruis Kadivar with Nazanin Afshin-Jam representing the "Stop Child Executions" organization, I understood the extent of this challenge.

It is always much easier to destroy instead of constructing something new. It is much easier to remain silent instead of speaking of a simple truth. This simple truth is that a young man is going to be executed because of the failure of a legal system. Ali Mahin Torabi is going to be hanged because in this system the money is more important than the justice. But even if he was really guilty - that he is not – still because of his young age he shouldn’t be executed.

Now if Nazanin Afshin-Jam and SCE or any other organization are trying their best to help Ali, are we supposed to dismiss them just because of some rumors? Do you mean that you have become so disgusted by these rumors that you rather Ali die instead of helping him? Or because we don’t like the guy who interviewed Nazanin, then we should go deaf on whatever she is talking about and feel good about ourselves by not signing the petition? Is this a kind of revenge from a dead monster that we used to hate 30 years ago?

I received emails from people who need to know the whole story before helping Ali. If you visit SCE site, I am sure that you will learn a lot about his case. And if you are not convinced about Ali’s innocence, still you can sign the petition for Delara or Reza or for any if these 80 faceless children in the similar situation. I have also received emails telling me that I have wasted pages to write about him. One of the emails was from an American who had lived in Iran. In this email he talks about his own experience with Iranians. He says that Iranians mostly sit and nag, but they wouldn’t get involved in any action to solve their own problems. He says we are always waiting for someone else to fix whatever is broken, even if we are the only ones who suffer from this situation.

Maybe he is right. In Ali’s case, we are not the one suffering. It is true. We are not sitting in a prison, we are not living in that society, we all have our own lives and or own priorities. We have our own “badakhties”. We believe “Taa nabashad chizaki mardom nagooyand cheezha”. Plus what can we do anyway, because we cannot fight with these hidden super powers that have written our destinies? We are doomed by an invisible black magic and it is a waste of time and energy to try breaking the spell.

But I can imagine Ali, who is young, scared and hopeful, who might think otherwise. I am sure Ali is grateful to anyone who signs the petition, anyone who writes a simple letter, anyone who expresses a little bit of compassion. I am sure Ali Mahin Torabi is thankful to Nazanin Afshin-Jam for trying to save his life. Because at least, she is trying. Nazanin or SCE might be his only source of hope.

So please don't kill Ali before his actual death.

Brava Nazanin, Merci Kadivar

by Alan (not verified) on

No matter who says what baseless rumors, What Nazanin does for Iranian/Middles Estern women, geneder equality, awareness for execution of minors, executions in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and many other countries including USA, her involvement and her speeches on disasterous situation in Darfur and many other humanitarian engements including awareness for wrong interpretation of Sharia Laws, freedom of political prisoners, Islamic legal prostitution (Sigheh) and many other numerous topics makes me believe she is an angel.
Nazanin: please continue your effort and do not let any one of these few ignorant messages discourage you.Millions of people are watching you and depend on you. As you always said, you are voice of voiceless, keep that going. You will always have a few ignorant,Islamist, jealous individuals who will try to stop you, but believe me, there is nothing in this world can stop you, because you are supported by millions of people.
Dear Kadivar: Do not let any one those stupid messages discourgae you, your efforts are appreciated by all those readers who follow you through out the world.

Hi dear Azarin:

I read your column. I appreciate your humanitarian voice. Iran is a big country, although Iranians, each of us is coming from a different background and experience; therefore, our opinions are widely different. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings; I was just being honest with you.

I wonder if Torabi was a from a Basiji family or an IRGC (i.e. Khodi), or he had a rich father, he would be in this situation.

If Justice were supposed to be applied equally across the board, all the criminal buthchers, ruling Iran should've been hanged a long time ago. Thank you Azarin for being a voice of reason in this morally bankrupt and twisted culture of ours.
