Originally featured in Washington Post, "For Kurdish Girls, a Painful Ancient Ritual". Photographer Andrea Bruce and special correspondents Nian Ahmed and Dlovan Brwari contributed to this report: Sheelan Anwar Omer, a shy 7-year-old Kurdish girl, bounded into her neighbor's house with an ear-to-ear smile, looking for the party her mother had promised. There was no celebration. Instead, a local woman quickly locked a rusty red door behind Sheelan, who looked bewildered when her mother ordered the girl to remove her underpants. Sheelan began to whimper, then tremble, while the women pushed apart her legs and a midwife raised a stainless-steel razor blade in the air. "I do this in the name of Allah!" she intoned. Kurdistan is the only known part of Iraq --and one of the few places in the world--where female circumcision is widespread. More than 60 percent of women in Kurdish areas of northern Iraq have been circumcised, according to a study conducted this year. In at least one Kurdish territory, 95 percent of women have undergone the practice, which human rights groups call female genital mutilation>>>Full text

Re. hendooneh's scientific claims:
by Multiple Personality Disorder on Sat Jan 24, 2009 08:26 AM PSTSo we go by science then:
American Medical Association states, “Virtually all current policy statements from specialty societies and medical organizations do not recommend routine neonatal circumcision...”
British Medical Association states, “…this surgical procedure (circumcision) has medical and psychological risks.”
UNAIDS states that “male circumcision is a voluntary surgical procedure and health care providers must ensure that MEN and YOUNG BOYS are given the necessary information to enable them to make FREE and INFORMED choices either FOR or AGAINST getting circumcised.”
So on the scientific part, I have at least American Medical Association and the British Medical Association as concerned about circumcision, and the UNAIDS recommendation that men and young boys be given necessary information to make a free and informed choice, which is what I said in the beginning. Why not give the children a chance to grow up and decide for themselves what they want to do with their bodies.

There is NO evidence male circumcision helps
by Alborzi (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 05:58 PM PSTThere are some interesting coincidences, in some cultures who do circumcise, a reduced HIV infection has been observed. This is an interesting observation, but its not a scientific double blind study. In fact among Jewish men who are circumcised, no such benefit is observed. Those African tribes may just frown upon the practice or have a genetic mutation. Repeat there is no scientific study yet that proves it one way or another.
Any mutilation is a barbaric custom.

International laws call the female circumcision, an inhuman treatment and cruel. But, what does this change for little girls in most Islamic countries? Nothing.
That’s a shame.
boys and girls, it makes no difference
by Multiple Personality Disorder on Tue Jan 20, 2009 05:34 PM PSTYou cannot separate mutilation of girls from mutilation of boys. If there is going to be an argument about whether circumcision is any good or not it has to be all-inclusive. Mutilation of any kind is a violation of human rights. If you disagree, then start mutilating figures, hands, feet, tongue… because for any of those limbs I, by myself, can come up with some GOOD reason for doing it.
ok, sorry if i am not making myself clear
by hendooneh on Tue Jan 20, 2009 05:26 PM PSTI whole-heartedly agree that FEMALE "circumcision" (a euphemism for genital mutilation) is a horrible crime that should be eradicated.
My post was in response to "Multiple Personality Disorder's" claim that there is no benefit to MALE circumcision
i hope we're crystal clear folks
American Medical Association
by Multiple Personality Disorder on Tue Jan 20, 2009 05:24 PM PST“Virtually all current policy statements from specialty societies and medical organizations do not recommend routine neonatal circumcision...” American Medical Association.
But once again let’s assume circumcision of boys is a necessary evil to prevent spread of HIV and STD’s, why don’t the PARENTs after they had a number of boys, cut off their own balls and weewees to prevent spread of HIV and STD’s if that’s the reason they’re so concern about. Oh no, that’s too painful for them, so they choose to mutilate their children. If they are so concern about the spread of HIV an STDs why do they engage in sex outside a committed sexual relationship? Why do they engage in anal sex? Why don’t they invest in some condemn? Oh no, that’s takes away too much from their pleasure, so the hell with the children! Let’s just mutilate them! Is that the logic here?
Thanks God

by Anonymous commentor (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 04:58 PM PSTcontrary to your supposition, it is HIGHLY recommended that circumcision be done in infantile males as risks are much higher in adult males.
circumcision could be avoided if there was more attention paid to hygiene in young males. unfortunately this is not the case. you can talk all you want about teaching little boys personal hygiene but the fact remains that they don't take care of uncircumcised penis' sufficiently. and once your little boy is past the age of YOUR washing him correctly, there is very little control.
studies have proved inconclusive with regard to sexual depreciation.
AI. kurdistan is in iraq. please, no insults. :-)
the bottom line from medical professionals is that circumcision is beneficial but not necessary. a thin line to be sure.

but for the uninformed person...male circumcision does have medical benefits.
heres another reference from new england journal of medicine

al. Male circumcision, penile human papillomavirus infection, and
cervical cancer in female partners. N Engl J Med 2002;346:1105–12.
Conclusions Male circumcision is associated with a reduced risk of penile HPV infection and, in the case of men with a history of multiple sexual partners, a reduced risk of cervical cancer in their current female partners.
this is sooo terrible
by sanazi on Tue Jan 20, 2009 04:57 PM PSThow can they do this to these poor little girls? Female circumcision is absolutely cruel!
At least male circumcision is done for cleanliness. It not only reduces the risks of contracting STDs for men but male circumcision has also been linked to lower rates of cervical cancer in women. In countries were most men are circumcised, the rate of cervical cancer is very low.

Apples to Oranges
by Melissa (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 04:54 PM PSTI'm not too keen on male circumcision, even though recently studies seem to be showing that there indeed appears to be a causal relationship been male circumcision and reduced HIV infection. While there are many ways to reduce the spread of HIV and other STDs, the findings of these studies can't be ignored and especially not in countries and populations that are being devasted by AIDS.
However, the need for the commentor here (hendooneh) to bring up male circumcision is odd and I have to say of questionable purpose. This girl and girls are clearly being mutilated. And certainly we can all agree that female reproductive anatomy and male reproductive anatomy are very different. Thus, my title "apples to oranges".

ignorance is bliss aint it?
by hendooneh on Tue Jan 20, 2009 04:41 PM PST"There is very convincing observational, biological and now clinical trial evidence suggesting that male circumcision has a strong protective effect against HIV transmission and acquisition. Data from more than 40 studies show that men who are circumcised are less than half as likely to get infected with HIV, and are also less likely to acquire or transmit other sexually transmitted infections. There
is also evidence that their partners have lower rates of HIV, sexually transmitted infections and even cervical cancer."
here is the reference:
United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/AIDSMark. 2003. Male Circumcision: Current Epidemiological and Field Evidence; Program and
Policy Implications for HIV Prevention and Reproductive Health. Conference Report. USAID: Washington, DC.
Whether you choose to ignore it or not...HIV is an epidemic, and to think that using arcane mentalities will prevent transmission is foolish. Shit happens. and you and the pope swear by coitus interruptus. LAWL!
Its sickening
by Alborzi (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 04:40 PM PSTI could not go through all of them, this is not
defensible either by medical values or moral values. Its purely an evil invention of idiots. I hope they make this practice illegal. I had not heard of it being practiced among Kords (I grew up in Rezayeh) and I hope this stupid practice does not spread to Iran. Notice many customs (like even male circumcison) was spread among moslems from others , even stoning of adulterers was/is not islamic, it is a Jewish law, but its developing its roots in Islamic law.
These pictures brought tears
by Fatollah (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 04:36 PM PSTThese pictures brought tears into my eyes! What kind of a custom is this!? I don't care whether it is in Kurdistan or somewhere in the planet! It is atrocious, sickening, revolting and just not acceptable! I am with "Multiple Personality Disorder" when it comes to circumcision, male or female, an old aged dumb relic of a tradition from the past.
Re. hendooneh's HIV & STD comment:
by Multiple Personality Disorder on Sat Jan 24, 2009 08:18 AM PSTSo, let’s say this is correct, which is not, and male circumcision ‘decreases the incidence of HIV and other STDs’, so then good parents who can not raise their children to behave in a responsible manner go ahead and mutilate their boys so they won’t contract STDs when they grow up?! Is that the logic here?!
And, how long HIV has been around, fifty years? So, people have been mutilating their children for thousands of years so we get to this point in the history so we don't get HIV?! Is that the idea?
And, most STD's are transmitted by irresponsible sexual behavior, not by a foreskin. Learn more about bacteria and viruses and teach them to your children and let them decide for themselves before you mutilate them.
