One of Us

Interview with vocalist Monika Jalili

by Nazy Kaviani
From the first time I heard Monika Jalili sing an Iranian tune, I was impressed by her art and her spirit.  With her musical training and her beautiful voice, she could sing anything, do any kind of music, and play to any audience her heart could desire. Yet, she has chosen to sing our songs, play our music, and sing them for us [video: Jaan-e Maryam].  Even before meeting her, I was impressed!  Ahead of her upcoming November 6th concert at Yoshi’s in San Francisco to benefit Golestan School, I was able to find a few minutes in Monika Jalaili’s busy schedule to chat with her.  If you live in these parts, go see Monika Jalili at Yoshi’s in San Francisco on Sunday night, November 6.  It is great music from a woman who has chosen to be one of us, for a cause that is a true source of pride for all Iranians. I was in tears from joy.  She is such an incredible singer, mother, and daughter.  I was fortunate enough to be sitting next to her mother!   Can you believe my luck!  And Monika's son, so adorable!  What an incredible night, and for such a great cause!  An unforgettable night!  And Yalda, what a wonderful lady!  Thank you all for putting this event together.

Thank you Nazy Jan for this wonderful photo essay on a Genuine Khanoum!

Monika Jalili's nationality

by fortheloveoflife on

She is not Iranian.  Jalili is her husband's name.  But she has a very deep love and respect for the culture and music.  The Wikipedia post is wrong.

Can't wait until the concert!

Nazy jan, thanks for the excellent essay

It was interesting to read about influence of "Mohammad Nouri" on Monika Jalili. She sure has a great music education. What an interesting story. Great essay. Thanks for sharing.

Behind Every Great non-Iranian Woman!

is a handsome, caring and run-of-the-mill Iranian man!

Thank you Nazy for the pictures, the interview and her life story. She is a great artist and a wonderful person.

See you all there on Sunday!

by farshadjon on

Thank you, Nazy khanum.

Great blog!

Esfand Aashena

I have heard Monika Jalili's name more than her work.

by Esfand Aashena on

Perhaps that's because she hasn't had many concerts in the East.  You also mentioned that her in-laws are in Europe, so any relations to Omid Jalili?

I always thought she was Iranian but now I know she is married to an Iranian!  I did not know that!  Good luck to her and hope to see one of her concerts soon.

The lady is beautiful & has a great voice, but she sings Persian song with Western approach....that is the impression I got:
