AP: Substitute midfielder Yoon Bit-garam drilled a left-foot shot from the edge of the penalty box in extra time Saturday to send South Korea into the semifinals of the Asian Cup with a 1-0 victory over perennial rival Iran. Iran, a three-time champion with no title since 1976, played a patient game and did not start threatening until about an hour into the match, while South Korea tried to attack from the start. “In the first half we didn’t play the football we like to play. Maybe that had something to do with the quality of Korea and maybe the stress our players had before the match,” said Iran’s outgoing coach Afshin Ghotbi, whose team was the only one to win all three group games >>>

The IR football team had to go
by Simorgh5555 on Sun Jan 23, 2011 02:02 AM PSTI support the team players but any team which waves the banner of the IR or sings their anthem should be disqualified.
The Islamic Republic should be expelled from all international sporting event and must not be recognised as representatives of the Iranian people
I am sorry for the players - they played well - but the exit of the team is welcoming.
Death to the IR.

by Doctor mohandes on Sat Jan 22, 2011 06:38 PM PSTwell, see that is the thing now. He does not want no assistants. It is gonna be a one-man-show. He wants to show the whole world who is da man:)) and single handedly lead iran to lift the next cup (with the help of a Jarre Sagheel) in Brazil 2012.
Dodooororororo Faramarz.

by G. Rahmanian on Sat Jan 22, 2011 06:35 PM PSTI totally agree. I want to be assistant coach, though. I understand Faramarz's frustration. He loves the game. He wants Iran to win, too. He sounds like my brother when he talks about Iran playing against Australia. My brother was a voluteer reporter for Keihan Varzeshi. He was very objective when he wrote, but then in private he would come up with many, "ifs." I couldn't say anything only because he was much bigger than me.
Iran Played a Patient Game!
by Faramarz on Sat Jan 22, 2011 06:23 PM PSTGood Analysis Dr. Mohandes!
So, Iran played like a patient (Bimar!) and the Koreans played like a Doctor, and our Doctor Mohandes was checking out the nurse and came up with this analysis!

by Doctor mohandes on Sat Jan 22, 2011 05:57 PM PSTI think We should Nominate FAramarz For the Job. He has all the needed credentials.:))
all he has to is to work a little bit on his pro-IRI "people" skills. that is it.
GO coach faramarz. make us champions of the world.
Teamwork: The Magic Wand!
by G. Rahmanian on Sat Jan 22, 2011 05:51 PM PSTI haven't seen this game, but I have seen Koreans play. They have revolutionized their game by concentrating on teamwork. The reason you see them everywhere is also thanks to their superior technique playing as a team. You want good teamwork? Get a coach who emphasizes only that and nothing else! He already has somhoof the best players in the country. Koreans used to play badly as a team, scattered uselessly all over the field. But then they changed and that's why we see them in the World Cup games more often.

by Doctor mohandes on Sat Jan 22, 2011 05:10 PM PSTWhy don't you enlighten us on that one? Keeping in mind that more than half of these players have been with the team and ghotbi for at least a couple of years and a fixed part of the team!!
Iran does have a very good team...
by Monda on Sat Jan 22, 2011 04:44 PM PSTand I agree with Faramarz that the next coach can build on Ghotbi's accomplishments.
we should be realistic
by iamfine on Sat Jan 22, 2011 04:38 PM PSTSouth Korea played much better. However, I was impressed with the first 3 games that TM played. We should try harder next time when facing south Korea.
Faramarzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!
by Doctor mohandes on Sat Jan 22, 2011 04:30 PM PSTDeh!!
we were Technically superior to the Koreans????? Are you Dreaming? Their Finess and their manuvers around our players were second to none and not to mention they were unstoppable! And that was precisley why we struggled as a team.
Nosrati In my opinion did marvelous and should not even have been taken out .
The reason they were not allowed to create any opportunities was becasue they were covered from ear to ear by the korean guys. I mean heck at times they were tripled-teamed.
Our next coach should completely change the team arrangemnet and we need a fundamental change. Building on what ghotbi created will continue to get us the same results. Kiling the weak ones and getting slaughtered by the big ones.
Sorry to see TM lose
by masoudA on Sat Jan 22, 2011 03:43 PM PSTand that comes from one who grew-up with Shahin in Amjadieh.
You guys don't know the half of the realities of our football. How many players were forced on Ghotbi today? take a guess. If you said 2 - you have underestimated. If you said none - you are too naiive and clueless about the realities of akhoond infested Iran.
Yet football and TM remains as a major platforms of nationalism in Iran - so Go TM - win or lose

Luck of the Draw
by Faramarz on Sat Jan 22, 2011 01:28 PM PSTToday Iran lost to a better team!
Ghotbi’s team lost to the best team in Asia, the team that made it to the last 16 in the World Cup. If we were lucky, we would have played Australia today and would have faced the Koreans in the finals and could have said that we are number two in Asia! But now, we are just eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Ghotbi was out-coached today. The 4-3-3 configuration with 3 defensive halfbacks (Neku, Ando and Nouri) never allowed any offensive creativity and the 3 forwards were lost in the 1st half! Although our players are technically superior to the S. Koreans, but as a team, we struggled for the first 60 minutes.
Heidari substitution for Nosrati fixed the problems on the right side. However, Khalatbari on the left was no match for a much stronger Cha Du Ri (22) and was never in the game. Our young center forward, Ansari Fard was never in the game either. We could have scored a lucky goal or could have made it to the penalty kicks, but S. Korea was the better team today and deserved the victory.
Iran has a very good team and I hope that the next coach can build on Ghotbi’s accomplishments.
