Another scientist was killed in a bomb blast at the beginning of the year. Dr Shahriari was a member of the nuclear engineering department of Shahid Beheshti University. I don't think it was IRI

by divaneh on

IRI has nothing to gain from this, and in fact this is a matter of embarrassment for the regime who is unable to protect its most precious assets. This was most probably the work of Israelis. The episode however highlights two well known points.

1. The intelligence and security apparatus in Iran is only capable of protecting the dictators against the will of the nation by arresting people on the street and torturing and killing them. It's however totally useless in detecting and thwarting foreign threats. This is in contrast to the role of the security forces in the democratic nations.

2. This would not be possible without the assistance of some elements inside the Iranian intelligence and security services. After all those who torture and kill their brothers and sisters for money, would do it for whoever pays for it.

by Bavafa on

All those working for IDF and/or Israeli Nuke program are fair subject to such assassination since they are making a living of terrorizing others.

then I say:

amen to that, any body whether IRI/Israel or US agent that are earning a leaving by providing material support to a terrorist regime, should expect such faith.

Gaddafi also denied the leak that he allegedly never travels without a Ukrainian nurse described as a "voluptuous blond"! He called that a US plot.

At least he's closer when calling classified docs as "US plots"!

by Anonymouse on

I have no doubt that this is an inside job.  No doubt.  They said the same nonsense about Ali-Mohammadi at the time until more evidence was shown later.

Foreign agents are busy running Stauxnet scripts not assassinating in the streets of Tehran with impunity.

I disagree. These are HVTs.

If Iran's security agencies suspected these gentleman of espionage or sedition, they would be of much greater value to be picked up and interrogated.

Expect even stricter security measures to be put in place following this attack.

I have to say, Iran's leadership is pretty cool and exercising a great deal of restraint under pressure:

Actually, Ahmadi opened his mouth this morning and completely dismissed the leaks and called them a US plot! Furthermore, he said that the Regime enjoys excellent relationship with Iran's neighbors!

Pathetic, delusional liar!

Nonsense

by Mammad on

Abbasi was sanctioned by the UNSC. He is a key man in the nuclear program. Ali-Mohammadi was murdered because he had worked with Abbasi, knew much, and had become a dissident.

Check your data before making a comment.

This is an assassination by foreign agents.

Absolutely an inside job

by Anonymous Observer on

for a regime that announces immediate arrest--and subsequent quick execution-- of culprits by "sarbazan-e gomnam-e emam-e zaman" every time there is a malfeasance against one of their henchmen, it is extremely suspicious - to say the least -- that the perpetrators of such daring acts of assassination remain at large.

In the alternative, IR's security forces aren't worth two s**ts if Israeli and American agents are running around wild in the streets of Iran, armed with all kinds of weapons, shooting Iranian citizens and getting away with it.

He also thinks no one has been so "cool under pressure"! Which explains their response to the Green pressure -- imprisonment and forced TV confessions about nonsense -- as well as other crumbling positions they've taken to bring them worldwide condemnation.

He thinks they're lack of response to Wikileaks is something 'for him' to ponder! No one has had a "chance" to make a response yet but he thinks their 2 minutes silence means something!

Another Inside Job

by Faramarz on

The simultaneous assassination attempt on the 2 professors by a group of men on motorcycles at 7:45 AM in front of the university looks like a standard inside job by the Regime's operatives.

Even if the US or Israel had operational capabilities in Iran, it would not be of this magnitude, and they would not have been deployed in such a manner and in broad daylight where they could be exposed to this extent. This plan shows complete lack of concern for detection and apprehension.

The two professors, Shahriari (killed) and Abbasi (survived) like the other scientist Ali Mohammadi (killed in January) were also part of the SESAME project (//www.sesame.org.jo/Council/CouncilMembers.as...) based in Jordan where they came in close contact with European and Israeli scientists.

The Regime is trying to plug the leaks and also send a message to its opposition that it means business!

The Iranians just accepted a date in Vienna for talks, which is encouraging.

I can't think of another country that would be so cool under this pressure. Can you?

Heck, they haven't even intimated diplomatic repercussions with KSA and UAE over the Wikileaks disclosures.

by azadi5 on

This man could have been killed by Mossad, to prevent Iran's progress in nuclear field, or he could have been killed by Iran's own intelligence agents if he was deemed to be leaking information to outside of Iran. who knows? Maybe in couple of years Wikileak will shed some light on this assassination as well.

Look at his bio. That's what you call a HVT (High Value Target).

There was a spoiler like this before the last round of talks with the West, as well. But this time it was a HVT.

Unfortunately, this provocation may be met with a response, which is not what folks like myself advocating rapprochement wish to see.

We may be approaching a more uncomfortable social environment, even for deluded self-exiles such as yourselves.

Terrorism: Regime's Pastime!

by G. Rahmanian on

The IR regime has masterminded many terrorist acts against Iranians since coming to power. Regime's agents have carried out similar assassinations and it is not unlikely that for reasons, yet unknown, this scientist was also murdered in cold blood, at regime's behest.

Masoud Kazemzadeh

Who Killed Him?

by Masoud Kazemzadeh on

Two physicians were also assassinated a few months ago. One of the physicians was the doctor at Kahrizak, who knew how the protestors were tortured and murdered by the regime officials. Apparently, he was about to leave Iran. The most likely entity that murdered him was the regime in order to prevent him to speak out and reveal the truth when he would reach outside Iran.

We do not know who killed this scientist. If he was a supporter of the Mousavi or Karrubi, then the hard-liners who assassinated the physician and also perhaps Professor Masoud Alimohmmadi could also be the ones responsible for his assassination.

Also if he was a spy for the foreign powers, the regime might consider it more to its advantage to kill him and blame it on foreign sources than arrest him and cause further embarrassment for the regime.

If more info comes out then we might be able to make better speculations.

Can't try and finger "the regime" for this one.

There's a war being directed at the people of Iran, there can be no mistake.

This in conjunction with the very select Wikileaks cables (only 220 mostly on Iran out of a total of over 210,000) is going to make the upcoming talks in Vienna very much strained, from Iran's point of view. It's too bad, too, for Iran (through Larijani) was attempting to show optimism going in to the talks.

Tougher times ahead for Americans and Iranians, I'm sorry to say.
