Iran 1-2 Saudi Arabia

Big loss in World Cup qualifying match in Tehran

ESPN: Saudi Arabia's hopes of qualifying for a fifth straight World Cup received a major boost when Osama Al Harbi scored three minutes from time to give his side a come-from-behind win over Iran at Tehran's Azadi Stadium. Masoud Shojaei had given the Iranians the lead in the 57th minute only for goals from Naif Hazizi and Al Harbi to earn the Saudis a win that moves them into third place in Group B of Asia's qualifying tournament for next year's World Cup finals. The top two teams qualify automatically for South Africa with the third place team progressing to a play-off with their counterparts in Group A. The victorious team from that clash then meets the winner of the Oceania qualifiers for a place in the finals>>>

Again, I am not approving of the situation. I am just saying that our "ideals" and slogans are one thing and reality is another.

Western countries have such strict rules regarding sexual harassment that most men wouldn't dare to cross the line with women. And this is how these societies protect their women in public places.

In other countries such as Japan, women do have their own separate sections in public transports..etc

And places like Iran, where sexual harassment laws are nonexistent and law enforcement is very weak, other measures have been taken to protect women.

This has nothing to do with women's "intelligence" or their capacity to decide what's good or bad for them.

What Realities "on the ground"??? Please refrain from inventing imaginary excuses for defending the indefensible. If there are rules to protect women, how come they don't apply when women get harrased and beaten in the bright day light just for showing a few strands of hairs? where are those people who are in charge of "protecting women" based on those mysterious realities?
Like Ananymous said women are well capable of using their own judgemnet of what is good or what is not good for them and certainly don't need someone to define it for them. You don't think they know what the atmosphere is in Azadi or any other stadium for that matter? Yet, the enthusiasm is there and they want to be there for they team and based simply on that premise they should be allowed in. Any reason given by IRI to prevent them is pure B.S.

by soccer fan (not verified) on

this is Saudi Arabia football

- Professional domestic league
- Spends millions in soccer
- Hire world class coaches
- Play a plenty of friendly games with world class teams

this is Iranian soccer

- Our domestic league isn't really professional. It just has a professional name but its far from it
- We don't spend millions for the sport even though millions in Iran love the sport
- We don't hire world class coaches
- We don't play friendly games with world class team. World class teams don't want to play with us because of many factors including money and politics.

Up to this point our team has made it based on individuals talents but that is not the way to go and we need a better system in place.

First of all, 2years they didn't come watch team melli and when they come WTF they left before game was over? Inha namard boodan

-When #11 scored in first half and he was all over us eachtime he had the ball WTF he wasn't marked?

-When our goalie went down and start killing time I was like WTF same thing happening again. u never kill time cuz it will kill u, It happens eachtime we do it.

-Iran has 6pnts and saudi is 7. and we have same ammount of games left. all we need to do is to win it all.

-this team worked well under pressure and went all the way to last game.

-Sad ending to Daie's career. for 10mint he was the best player and coach in the history of iran. he was that close to go down in history as the greatest.

-new coach and hopefully Karimi is in good shape and spirit.

-no matter what u say. Saudi did played good. what damn comeback. beating Iran in 100k azadi. with no saudi flag. they deserv it. they had same chances but they took it. there was a penalty reff didnt call it. and that first goal was a goal.

Good luck for teame melli.

Your argument is chauvanistic in and of itself. Are you saying that women are like children and have to be "protected" against men?!!!! That argument may have been true in the 7th Century, but it has no place in a modern society. Women can take care of themselves. Let them go to the game. If they don't like the environment, THEY can decide not to go the next time. It's not up to you or anyone else to tell them what environment is good or bad for them.

Many Guilty Actors

by MiNeum71 on

Daei made mistakes concerning the tactical formation, and there are probably better coaches for this team (Qotbi), but there are also many realities which weren´t caused by him:

The whole football system lacks professionalism. better coaches did not
want the job. friendly games were cancelled by foreign governments because of politics, the abroad players are too weak to lead a team (it is not Daei´s job to show the players the basics like Mahdavikia who failed to score alone in front the goal or Nekounam who failed to score not once but two easy headers into the goal or Rahmati who didn´t put a player to the second post).

Since 1978 we only won one Asian finals (12 tournaments) and qualified twice for the WC (7 WCs); our football meets many big problems.

Besides, Daei was the one reformed the national team after the embarrising matches in the AC´07; he brought Rahmati, Khalatbari, Rezaei, Zare, Khalili, also Shojaei out of the bench into the first 11.

and what makes you to know better than woman ? because you are a man ?? I think this issue goes back directly to how some of Iranian man are so selfish and backward, simple as that, people with ertejaee thinking always blame something for their shortcoming, they mostly blame people and always put themselves above everyone else, it does not matter what the environment would be in stadium, this is about having the basic fundamental human right, let women have the right and let them decide if they want to be in that atmosphere or not, shame in all iranian fan, players and citizen that have stayed quite or tried to justify this backward action and discrimination of the half of Iranian population.

The reason why women can't go to football games in Iran has nothing to do with Islamic rules, "apartheid" against women, women rights or anything of this sort. It is simply because the environment at football stadiums in Iran is not appropriate for women. Anyone who has ever been into the Azadi stadium knows what I am talking about.

For now, the environment at football stadiums is overly male dominated and there is way too much swearing, dirty slogans and testosterone in the air for women to be comfortable in there. The process of letting women into stadiums should be gradual. Expecting the government to just suddenly change the rules based on some feminist ideals, is wrong and counterproductive.

They don't stay consistent and change throuought the game so many times!! besides, Which one of our national players, in recentyears has scored Like shoojaei? 2- not playing decent international teams often.
That is all.
Good Techniqual comments. The gap within our defense was just too broad... and that was so visible at any situation and this one in particular.

Ananymous 111

That has nothing to do with our men being "chauvanistic". Men should not have to let this issue interfer with their desire to enjoy their favorite sport. There are so many ways through which they can truly demonstrate their willingness and support of having women's rights implemented in iran.

It would be much more effective if they had announced their refusal in participating in future games, well ahead of time rather than the last 20 minutes or even hours! what can that accomplish? You can not count on IRI not punishing them and no one should take that chance. That is just plain stupid.

Your principals and conclusions do not match. This is not about the team's courage and dignity outside the field as much as when they are on the field. Try to think more clearly :)

Well, this is a good occasion for us Iranian to wake up and stop being so arrogant and full of ourselves and start to actually work hard for what we want.

We have been calling Arabs "soosmar khor" and "pa berehneh" for so many years, thinking that we are naturally better than them at everything. Now it is time for us to wake up and see all other nations as our equals and realize that we will fall behind them if we don't start working hard for what we want, instead of sticking to 14 centuries old grudges and empty arrogant slogans!!

ThePope

Why Daei....?!!

by ThePope on

The 2nd goal (corner) is a good example.

Daie didn't even have the basic knowledge of corner kick set-ups (tactics and formation). One of the simpliest formation during a corner kick is to form a defence box in the 6ghadam (5 o nim metr) by having two players on each post, two players toward the kicker (on conrner),  one  in center of 6ghadam line and one in front of the second post (tir-e dovom).

Watch (pause) min 4 and look at Iran's lame formation for the corner kick:
-team-melli is missing 2 player to form the corner defence formation
-No one is on the second post!!!
[if you want only one player on the post, don't put him on the first but on THE SECOND POST]
-Where's the rest of team in 18ghadam; cheraa enghadar baaz...!!!!

Overall, we witnessed 90 mins of a disgracefull football match.
(just like their past games...)

The Pope

by Anonymous111 (not verified) on

I think that if the male members of our nation had any sense of diginity and honor, they would collectively boycott all games until women were allowed into the stadium. That's what any decent human being would do. Unfortunately, our men are too chauvinistic to do so.

I also think that FIFA shoud ban IRI's (Iran's-unfortunately) national team from all future games until they allow women to attend games. In fact, I think that FIFA should ban Iran from all future games until it gives women equal legal and personal rights across the board. There is precedent for this. FIFA banned South Africa when it was an partheid regime. The IRI is also an apartheid regime when ot comes to women. It practices gender apartheid, just like South Africa practiced race apartheid. SA used to jail black activists and IRI jails women activists. So, I think its more than proper for them to ban Iran from all future competitions.

Also, if our so-called "national team" had any honor and dignity, it would wait until about 20 minutes before the start of their next match and then refuse to go on the field and demand that women be allowed into the stadium before they would play. That would place the IRI in an impossible position. They will have to comply. I don't think they could afford the bad publicity that would go along with denying that request. The team members can also rest assured that if they collectively do this and put the IRI on the spot, the IRI would not dare punish them or their families because, again, the IRI would be facing an international outcry and also a possible FIFA ban.

In sum, as I said below, if our so-called "national team" does not have this sort of courage dignity, it deserves to (and I hope it does) lose every game!

Here's another reason

by concerned football fan (not verified) on

This team has never had a decent preparation match in the last few years. The preparation match (or friendly match)is a way to prepare a team for a tournament. Playing against Kuwait, China, 2nd or 3rd national team from a country in Africa is not considered a preparation match. This team needs to play against top notch teams in Europe, South America, or Africa countiuously in order to compete in any tounaments. Inability of IR football federation to fix a good preparation match is our country (sadly to say)is very isolated from the rest of the world. Most nations refuse to deal with IR even for a friendly match.

So, football has also become the casuality of IR politics.

Success and Failure

Before this match, Despite our money and organization disadvantages,I prayed for Iran to prevail, as Saudis have had prevailed over us 3 times before mainly back in 1994, 2002 World Cup qualifications! Well our prayers were not answered this time again, simply because we have deep fundamental problems deep in our Government,Politics,Organization and Society...
We must take a radical shift in our collective consciousness in every aspect...

Success and Failure are both the SAME THING, the only thing that separates them is TIME........

May our time as Iranians finally come to enjoy success and happiness once again...

Same method, same results

by Ali P. on

It's easy to fault the coach, or the players for the loss. Had we had won, and even if we had made it to the world cup, chances are we'd have received the same results we always get: a tie, and two losses.

I learned "the beautiful game"- as Pele calls it- playing on the asphalt in school and in the alley, with almost no coaching. The only systematic coaching was received by only those who joined clubs at the age of 16 or higher.

Sixteen is too old to start training for soccer. Europeans produce great players because they have soccer schools, training kids as young as five.

I thought this was yet another opportunity we, the revolution generation missed, and the nation has learned from the past, and finally realizes the value of early soccer education, and for a while I thought they did set up some soccer schools in Iran.

Sadly this has not been the case. We have a long way to go.
