I nominate my wife Roya Hakakian, author of Journey from the Land of No, as Iranian of the day. This is her picture with Benazir Bhutto shortly before her assassination. It feels as if it was just yesterday...

Was Roya involved in moving
by Ye Irani (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 07:44 PM PSTWas Roya involved in moving the 40 jewish immigrants from Iran to Israel?
My problem Roya
by Daryush on Wed Jan 02, 2008 06:00 PM PSTMy problem with her is not that she wrote a book, her choice and freedom, but that she has been sold to the American Media. the problem with her and some other "memoir Writers" (Also Abbas Milani) is not their book and transfer of thoughts, But the fact that they became a tool for the western media to toy with them and demonize Iran to enforce sanctions on the innocent Iranian people. If you look at all the interviews that she has given you will see that she was used, knowingly or unknowingly, to enforce Bush's fascist policies on the poor Iranian people. That is what she should be ashamed of, not her book. Hope someday she will realize that...
Such Attention
by haqooq (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 05:50 PM PSTSomeone does not get such attention, unless they have struck a chord, taken a risk, exposed a part of their story. That she still gladly fights for the rights of all Iranians, despite the bigotry thrown in her face, speaks torrents about her courage and her beauty.
A very cheap and disgraceful
by Anonymous. (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 05:35 PM PSTA very cheap and disgraceful way of advertising (making money out of a khoda biamorz!). Shame on both the husband and wife.
Get over it!
by AliBaba (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 04:48 PM PSTThose of you Oghde'ee people, time to exit the Masjid and get used to a multi-cultural, multi-religious Iran.
Ugly Arab Lovers
by Gilani (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 04:38 PM PSTI like this picture. I think both Benazir and Roya look charming in it. If you think that Roya is not good-looking, go take a look at your sister’s mustache. It might occur to you to use it as a paint brush. All stinky Muslims here who say Zionist this and that should get a life (vali man fakr nemikonam shoma adam besho hastid). I do not give a hoot about Palestinians in an Iranian forum. The issue at hand is Iran and anything that relates to the welfare of her citizens. Iranian Jews like any other group are mistreated by the Islamist government. And, I expect charming Hakakian to write about her Jewish experience in Iran, because she is an Iranian Jew.
discredit
by zzzzzz (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 04:22 PM PSTI am willing to sit down before historical facts
And what are the historical "facts"? Are they the "facts" that you decide to accept?
.
P.S. I do not know ANYTHING about Saeed Kafili, or what he/she stands for, but anyone claiming to know the facts, and judging other's statements on his/her pre-conceived "facts", is a discredit. You need to begin with yourself! ;)
Can we all just agree on this?

I will listen to you, and your opinions about your political views. I try to weigh your logic, and if I am convinced, I submit to it, and deep down, I thank you.
You want to tell me about the advances of Iran, under the Pahlavis, I'll listen, but don't make fun of Khamenei's handicap, or Ahmadinejad's height.
You want to tell me about all the bad things that the two Pahlavis Shah's did, I'll listen, but don't take cheap shots at their wives.
You want to tell me what a hero Ayatolla Khomeini was, I'll listen, but don't call everyone, who didn't agree with him, a "traitor".
You want to tell me how horrible the Islamic revolution was, I'll still listen, but don't tell me everyone who wanted a revolution was a foreign agent.
I am willing to sit down before historical facts, prepared to give up every preconceived notion, humbly wherever and whatever logic leads, but you lose me, when you take cheap shots; when you pull things out of the air, when you curse, when you hate unconditionally, or love unconditionally.
No matter what our political views are, I hope that we are all decent Iranians. We do not cross the line of decency. I'd like to see this wonderful forum free of these poisenous ways of expression.

RE:Hawes380
by XerXes (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 02:06 PM PSTOh get a freaking life. Unfortunately I do own her book since you must always know your enemies language. Secondly this has nothing to do with her religion, although she tries hard to portray herself as a victim. It's her Zionist mentality that is bothersome. Just like the rest of the Zions who first become the victims then they go and kill and demolish whatever comes to their way. No I disapprove of her because in the times that there was a possibility (Still is) that the west attacks Iran, she took my enemies side. Not her religion but her ideology. Go shove your Human Rights Bowl shit, when she talks about Zionists and American injustices the same, then I'll buy your argument. Other than that she is another stupid Rush limbaugh and the Cheney gang.

The price of democracy is to have to read
by Kcuf Shallum (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 01:33 PM PSTand tolerate the ArrArr of a bunch of animals (e.g., Malijacks and Nochehs of the Mullahs).
Benazir like her father were too good to reign over a bunch of pajama -wearing barbaric Pakistanis as Shah was too good to reign on the barbaric Muslims in Iran
Bigotry
by Hawes380 (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 11:24 AM PSTI can't believe some of these comments I am reading here.
First you attack her writings which I can promise you have not even read her book, then you attack her look ( which is mirror image of a descent Iranian lady without all the makeup and the blond hair.) and when you get nowhere with that you call her a sell out. hmmm, I can't help but to think people like XerXes say these just because she is jewish.
I still can't believe that some of us are willing to bring down a fellow Iranian merely because she appeard on TV or because she wrote her memoir in which she showed a good side of Iranians to the Americans. It's a shame...
Flavor du Jour
by sz (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 11:18 AM PSTRoya Hakakian and Ramin Ahmadi MD in addition to being tireless human rights advocates are both superb essayists. Their unwavering dedication to their chosen mission is a rare ray of guiding light in the wilderness of Diaspora’s itinerant, flavor du Jour politicking.
Please go publish her photo somewhere else
by XerXes (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 10:55 AM PSTPlease go and publish her photo in the fox news and such, where she is welcomed. She has sold herself for Neo-cons cause and it's a crime to even include her in anything Iranian.
Roya Hakakian
by Aramak (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 10:12 AM PSTWhat's up with showing off your picture with Benazir Bhutto? Is it to impress people? Let's not forget Benazir and her husband were couple of corrupt individuals who were considered as criminals in Pakistan until US felt that they can be used to prop up Mosharaf. Benazir was just there to push US policies. She had no intention to serve her people.
I am sure there are more qualified Iranian people than the self-serving individuals that visit this web site.
I do not think commenting about her look is appropriate.
She is no Anne Frank
by Crapper (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 09:13 AM PSTShe had high hopes to be accepted as Iran's Anne Frank but Roya Hakakian, unlike Anne Frank, enjoyed a lavish life of luxury in the Islamic Iran and later in the US. So sorry Roya , you don't even stand as the little finger of Anne Frank. Too Bad!
Roya's ideology-footaleh
by mamal_Amrikayee (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 08:38 AM PSTShe is just like the Borg in the Star Trek, she believes that you must "join the collective, resistance is futile". The same ideology that Zionists preach. And remember, resistance is futile!!
to Hassan Kachal and Arastu
by no propaganda (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 08:10 AM PST"Hassan Kachal" jan, can’t you not to tease me! I know I am past due for my eye check up; but since I am off today, I decided to give just some comments of the sake of it. Ohh I should say I like her husband first name...:)
"Arastu" khan, Could you please keep the dirty talk for "Persian lesson" video. I think it doesn’t justify for this one.

by Hassan Kachal (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 06:56 AM PSTWhen was the last time you visited an optician?
No propaganda please!
by no propaganda (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 06:42 AM PSTSince I don’t know any thing about her book, and also I don’t like propaganda, I just say nice looking ladies. ;)
what!
by No Comment on Wed Jan 02, 2008 06:25 AM PSTyou guys are idiots what does her religion has to do with anything. and as far as i can remember she never exactly "complained" about the way "jews" were treated in Iran.
I like the picture.
What have they done?
by x-pasdar (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 05:51 AM PSTWhat the hell has Hakakian and Ahmadi have done to be compared with Benazir Bhutto? All she did was to write a phoney and exaggerated fictional story about herself and the jews in Iran like they were the victims of Nazis. They were treated bettr than all other minorities. They even made a pact with Rafsanjani and later with Khatami to allow them to go to Israel freely. All this Hakakian has done was to milk the public by writing lies and fabrications. Benazir lost her life while Hakakian filled her pocket and that of her hubby.
Roya
by Anonymous-haha (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 05:33 AM PSTShe would never mention the crime of the Zinoists towards Palestinians.
Unique couple
by Fred (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 04:13 AM PSTIn the menagerie of opposition to the Islamist Republic’s heinous crimes against humanity, this wife and husband, Roya and Ramin, are unique and have a stellar record. Thank you both for documenting the abuses and all that you do for the multitude of faceless, nameless victims of Islamist Republic.
