I don’t really know where it came from exactly. I always was intrigued by the Italian Mafia system, you know, the loyalty, the cleverness of doing things without getting caught and of course the beautiful way of handling things with the enemy.
Italy always symbolized this ancient beauty for me. The people look like Persians, the same color of hair, skin and eyes. Their attitudes are like Iranians also, they have to accentuate what they mean by moving their hands in the air when they talk. They are charming, and hospitable like my country mates and just as sensitive as us.
This was my image of Italy through my life, but my passion for Italy grew with so many other things. I started noticing stories of Dutch students who went to Rome for a 6 months experience. Or a student who went to Canada for international experience but surprisingly enough met many Italian students there and I read how Italians react in times of homesickness… I bought a book months ago called “Gardens of Delight” in where, the Italian beautiful gardens are portrayed as the scenery of the story… I have started listening to Tiziano Ferro for almost two months now and consider myself his fan now!!
And it is universally known that spaghetti is my favorite dish! Most people have trouble going out with me because I insist on going to an Italian restaurant. Believe it or not, I can smell Italian cuisine from a distance…
Oh my beloved ancient beautiful Italy… The world is a real cruel place to be in. My old handsome musician friend has left me here, to go and live in Italy. When his plans for leaving were certain, he had a big difficulty telling me that. Not just because we are good friends and we will miss each other. Noooooooo that was just twenty percent of his worries, he just knew how I would react to his plan…
When he told me the news, I had burst into tears: “NOOOO, Italy is MY country; YOU can’t go there to posses it!” He tried to comfort me by: “But azizam, I will be thinking about you every time I put a foot on the streets.”
“But that is not good enough.” I sobbed.
“Every time I breathe the Italian air?” He tried again.
That was better, but still, I felt he was betraying me, which he obviously noticed:”Look at it this way, see me as someone who is going to symbolize your presence in Italy in the time that you can’t go and live there.”
So I was hushed and caressed and all! And somehow I found a way to hide my sorrow then, yet every time he will be hearing that Italian music, go in to the streets of romance and love with the sunny sky above his head smiling at him, every time the scent of the streets motivates him to create more beautiful artistic pieces, I will be left behind in cold Holland with the familiar wind, that I know for many years, to surprise me more every week!

la dolce vita
by la dolce vita (not verified) on Thu Nov 01, 2007 02:38 AM CDTIn late sixties during the Shah time when I was growing up in Iran. The Italian movies were most popular. Italian music was played on radio, TV and sold in record store. Love of Italian movies and music was so common among the young at that time. I can recall so many songs from those days. Like Gino Paoli , Albano, Fasto Papeti, etc. My favorite song is by Gino Paoli called 'Sapore de sale sapore de mare' the melody and the lyrics are sweetly romantic and sensual at the same time. The same goes for another song called "Senza fine". When I was studying physics in Tehran University .I took Italian courses only to understand these songs and to be able to sing them. I used to get a lots of millage singing them to girls those days. That was la dolce vita.
A movie called Nel Sole in farsi translated to "javanan zeer aftab" played for more than a year in Teheran. You can write books about the influence of italian pop culture on Iran during sixties.
Wtf?
by Taraneh (not verified) on Wed Oct 31, 2007 04:42 PM CDTMafias romantic way of doing things? Italian men? Are you kidding me? Have you seen documentaries about the italian mafia and how low life they are? Italy is a nice country, as much as France or China, but to elevate it in certain ways some comments do here is beyond me, grow up.
Past Life?
by Mehdi on Tue Oct 30, 2007 08:30 PM CDTMaybe you should consider the idea of past lives. Maybe you used to live in Italy. Maybe you were part of Mafia somewhere. It's not as odd as you may think!

I left half of my heart in Venice
by daydreamer (not verified) on Tue Oct 30, 2007 11:18 AM CDTI spent a month in Italy last year cruising the west coast of it and than by train the rest. Its an amazing place to visit. My favorite place was Venice and Florence ,I did not care for Rome that much except the Coliseum and other historic sites. I would love to go back there, maybe to Tuscany and take a cooking class and just sit back drink some awesome red Italian wine and look at the vineyards and sunset, I know that sounds gay but to me that's life.
Ahhh...Veramente un bellissimo paese!
by Shabnam_Ghayour on Tue Oct 30, 2007 10:57 AM CDTYup, you arent alone. Infact i have learned the language, dated almost entirely Italian men, mastered the foods from all its regions and absorbed its culture from head-to-toe. Its so easy to see why people fall in love with Italy... And i notice that Iranians seem to have a particular affinity with it, and i wonder if it lies in our unspoken similiarities such as culture of food, family and patriotism... maybe... maybe... Either way... I spend each day dreaming of the next time i visit my 2nd favourite country in the world... (Only 2nd to Iran, of course)
You're not the only one my
by Kamangir on Tue Oct 30, 2007 10:38 AM CDTYou're not the only one my friend. I know many other Iranians, including myself that do like the whole mafia style, including films such as 'Donnie Brasco' or charcters such as Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, Robert de Niro.
It has to do as you said, with our own attitudes and cultural interactions, that resembles their 'family oriented' life style. The fact that they are a patriarcal society, were wife and children are everything,etc...
Iranians do have a lpve affair with them.
