Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence against Iranian journalist
Morteza Firouzi following a final review of his case. Amnesty International
fears that Morteza Firouzi may now face imminent execution. Unconfirmed
reports have suggested that Morteza Firouzi may be stoned to death. His
sole chance of escaping the death penalty rests with the possibility of

* Press watchdog appeals against Iran death sentence, (Reuters) -
A watchdog organisation on press freedom appealed on Monday to Iranian
President Mohammad Khatami to help secure a re-trial for an Iranian journalist
sentenced to death on adultery and spying charges. Reporters without Borders
said it asked Khatami to use his influence so that former Iran News editor
Morteza Firoozi could face ``a just and fair trial in the presence of lawyers
and international observers, with the charges being spelled out.''... full

* Rushdie slams EU in surprise Berlin appearance, (Reuters) -
British author Salman Rushdie, in hiding to evade a death sentence from
Iran for his novel ``The Satanic Verses,'' on Sunday criticised the European
Union for failing to take a tougher diplomatic stance against Tehran. Rushdie,
who made a surprise appearance at a conference on persecuted writers in
the German capital, told a small group of journalists that the EU had been
``hypocritical'' in its softer policy towards Iran but hard line with neighbouring
