we should never be so naive as to presume that developments at the interface
of international sports and politics extend only to relations between the
two nations most directly involved. In the case at hand, there is absolutely
no question that U.S.-Iraq relations have directly impacted and thereby
given direction and momentum to U.S.-Iranian overtures. As much as anything
else this means that the athletic exchanges that the U.S. enjoys with Iran
have emerged through a "window of opportunity," not through a
sweeping vista of enlightenment... go

smile, showing her brown, toothless gums. Mike is taken aback. I can see
his chest heave. But I have to hand it to him, he is in control of his
voice when he answers her. "Let's see if you can guess, Nanjoun,"
he says. The old woman, who sports a graying mustache, takes up the challenge.

United People's Assembly
A much-needed addition to the United Nations
There are those who argue that we must return to an earlier age of strict
national sovereignty, economic barriers to trade and investment, and cultural
protection of national identity. However, that solution does not appear
to be either realistic or necessarily desirable. As a globalist, Ikeda
has proposed the formation of an NGO organ within the United Nations to
represent the views and interests of civil society. To follow the same
logic, the General Assembly could have two branches consisting of a People's

Mixing memory and desire
Iranians in the United States

... as the 20-year old political grudges between Iran and the United
States are fading away, and new political realities are emerging. New generations
of Iranians and Iranian-Americans are born in the United States who have
no memory of the revolution and whose reaction to Iran is more inherited
than visceral. As Iranians settle into their new lives in the US, the idea
of permanent "return" becomes more and more remote, while short
visits gain in prominence. Additionally, the new "ethnic-chic"
trends in the U.S. welcome and encourage an examination and return to one's
