* U.S. arms embargo on Iran has loophole: Canada, (New York Times
) - Several times over the past few years, Reza Akrami, an Iranian,
left his home in the Vancouver area and flew to San Francisco to see a
mysterious man who spoke in Persian and called himself Dr. Afshar. Eventually,
a shadowy deal was put on the table. Dr. Afshar would arrange delivery
of American-made jets and military parts, including electronics to guide
anti-aircraft missiles. The destination for the parts was Iran... The deal
never came off. "Dr. Afshar" was an undercover agent for the

* Oldest prophetic religion struggles for survival, (Christian Science
Monitor) - Deep in the heart of downtown Bombay, a century-old blue-granite
building stands like a silent sentinel to an ancient community in rapid
decline. The dilapidated building houses the Parsi Lying-in Hospital, established
in 1893 as a maternity unit for the city's once-thriving Parsi community.
Built to accommodate 40 beds, its wards are almost empty today. "We
get only four or five patients a month," says Zarin Langdana, the
doctor-in-charge. "And most of them are not Parsis."... full

* Persian roots of Zoroastrian faith, (Christian Science Monitor)
- The Zoroastrian religion was expounded sometime before 600 BC by
the ancient Persian prophet, Zarathustra, who lived in what is now eastern
Iran. Some scholars, however, say the prophet, whose name means "rich

and benign God, and the rejection of polytheism. The word Parsi is thought
to be derived from Fars, the name of the port in Persia from which the
Parsis fled in the 10th century AD to protect their religion from Islamic
persecution... full

* Iran women loosen the fashion strait-jacket, (Daily Telegraph)
- For nearly 20 years the government-dictated garb of hijab has shrouded
Teheran's women in uniform black tents. Now, suddenly, the hijab is sprouting
leopard skin designs and fur trimmings to match Gucci's latest fashion
accessories. More significantly, some women are wearing raincoats or donning
the hijab loosely like a cape, revealing short-skirts, tight jeans, black
silk stockings and high heels. Rather than an imposed dress code, female
modesty is becoming increasingly a matter of individual choice... full
