IRAN-U.S.
* It's time for the U.S. and Iran to sit down and talk, (Bruce Laingen / Chrsitian Science Monitor) - When I was a hostage in Iran, often venting my frustration with those who held us, one of the more friendly of them would sometimes try to reassure us by reciting a Persian proverb: Nothing ever stays the same forever. It will soon be 20 years since Iran and the United States had an official relationship. While that may not rank as forever in relations between states, it is a long time. But recent signals back and forth between the two governments, however tentative, suggest that perhaps the Persian proverb may have some relevance. It should: America's interests are ill served by what prevails today... full text
* Judge: Iran liable for death , (AP) - The family of a New Jersey woman killed by terrorists still has to collect the Iranian assets awarded them by a federal judge, and that may not be easy. Acknowledging obstacles to collecting the cash, the Flatow family lawyer, Steven Perles, said the money could come either from funds frozen by the United States or from Iranian assets in other nations that have arrangements with the United States to recognize rulings by each other's courts.... full text

The Rendez-vous
By Azdeh Naderi
While Mahmoud wrestled with kids, the woman prepared breakfast. She would put fruit and snacks in their lunch boxes, and sharpen their colored pencils, and be sure that they had erasers and notebooks. She would be sure that their socks matched, and their faces were washed before they left home. After they left, she would remain. But not today. Today she would leave in a few hours to keep an appointment over the years she had occasionally thought of. On July 14, 1976, in a moment of love and ecstasy, she and a lover had promised to try to meet, and if they could not meet at least to think of one another and of the place. Now, although the woman was all but certain that only she would keep faith with the old pledge, she was determined to go... full text

Persepolis... forever!
Perspolis will ALWAYS remain Persepolis ["Perseplis or Piroozi?"]! I hate to combine soccer (sports) with politics, and really detest those who do. Persepolis literally means "Iranian (persian) city". Just ask any Greek what Pers means? Same goes for Polis. I was for change of Taj to Esteghlal, since it made sense to change it after th revolution, but Perspolis? Never. Anyways, ... had to let the steam out. Kamran Arasteh <kamy@execulink.com>

Talk to the largest Persian speaking country in the world
The challenge for serious-minded realists on both sides is how to exploit the still small openings beginning to appear. Both governments have begun lowering their rhetoric - the first essential for any attempt at dialogue. Both can benefit from greater private exchanges, to nurture the common ground they share in human terms - not least, the fact that the US is today the second largest Persian speaking country in the world.
