* Pro-Khatami student group spearheads campaign for openness, (AFP) - The largest student group in Iran vowed on Sunday to press for political openness in the Islamic republic in line with President Mohammad Khatami's vision of a law-abiding "civil society." Daftar-e-Tahkim-e-Vahdat (Strenghtening Solidarity Office) (EDS: correct) is a left-leaning Islamic movement which supports the 1979 Islamic revolution, but is opposed to the powerful conservative faction of the Islamic regime, calling it "monopolist and undemocratic." ... full text
* Conservative Iranian students want moderate minister impeached, (AFP) - Some 2,000 students supporting the conservative clergy staged a demonstration on Monday demanding that parliament impeach moderate Interior Minister Abdollah Nuri. * Najafabad ends protest over mistreatment of Montazeri, (AFP) - Shopkeepers in a central Iranian town have ended a strike to protest at the house arrest of a senior dissident cleric, the official IRNA news agency reported Monday. IRNA said shops in Najaf-Abad reopened on Sunday and the town "has regained its normalcy." Owners had closed their shops on Saturday to protest at "disrespect" to Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri, a disgraced cleric living under house arrest in the holy city of Qom, also in central Iran... full text

State Department report discourages "random, ad hoc" sanctions
USA*ENGAGE today praised the report issued by the Sanctions Working Group to the U.S. Department of State's Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy. The report, U.S. Economic Sanctions: A Strategic Framework, stresses the importance for the United States to adopt a systematic approach when considering the use of future economic sanctions -- instead of relying on the "random and ad hoc" decision-making process that is prevalent today... full text

* Iranian MPs unable to pay cellular phone bills, (AFP) - Many deputies in the Iranian parliament cannot afford to pay rising cellular telephone bills and at least two of them had their phones disconnected for non-payment, a newspaper reported Monday. One MP, who was not identified, told Arzeshha weekly that the "problem is affecting the majority of deputies, including myself." ... full text

* Russian premier denies Iran sale, (AP) - Trying to soothe a major worry of the United States, Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin insisted today that Russia is sticking to its promise not to transfer nuclear weapons technology to Iran. ``We are true to our commitments and we shall never depart from them,'' Chernomyrdin said. ``We have not transferred and will not transfer anything to Iran.''... full text

* Ganji released from prison: paper, (AFP) - A left-leaning Iranian journalist arrested three months ago for allegedly criticizing the government has been released, a newspaper reported Saturday. Akbar Ganji, director of literary monthly Rah-e-No (New Way), left the prison on Thursday after three months in temporary detention, Jamee newspaper said. A revolutionary court this week sentenced Ganji to one year in jail on charges of "disturbing and trying to harm the public opinion," but suspended nine months of the sentence and put him on probation for five years... full text

The theme of this year's seminar is "Central Asia and the Caucasus: The Role of Regional Powers in Conflict Resolution and Economic Development." In this seminar, a variety of related subjects including the important issue of the Caspian Sea basin with regards to viewpoints of Iran, Russia, China, and Turkey should be discussed and explored.
