Cyrus the (not so) Great
Did he start imposing the hijab?
By Sandra Mackey
In the endless debate on the origin and practice of veiling in the Islamic world, which many see as symbolic of woman's inferior status to man, some historians argue that it was Cyrus the Great who, ten centuries before Islam, established the custom of covering women to protect their chastity. * Wonderful experience
I must say I enjoyed your witty comments on each of the pages [The Iranian Music section]. Your description of each of the singers is done with taste and thought. you make your reader feel like they've participated in each of your encounters with the singers.
Even though I am not Iranian and of no Iranian origin except for the 2500-year-old common ancestry (I am of slavic/polish origin) I enjoyed reading your site and listening to the music. Truly a wonderful experience. Aleksandra Jachtholtz, Waterloo, Canada.
* Islam in America
Please pass my compliments to Nasser Sagheb. He has done a fine job of research on his documentary "Islam in America". I hope he will continue trying to get it produced. Robert D. Burgener <INTERNECT@classic.msn.com>
