* U.S. judge orders Iran to pay $247 million, (Reuters) - In a ruling that could complicate U.S. rapprochement with Iran, a judge on Wednesday ordered Tehran to pay $247 million to the family of an American student killed in the 1995 bombing of an Israeli bus. Vowing to strike a blow against what he called ''state-sponsored terrorism'' with the huge damages award, U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth said: ``We cannot be stronger in condemning this action. It has no place in civilized society.'' ... full text ...Also see related item below:
* Twisted News Network :-) Iranian judge orders U.S. to pay $72 billion in damages: - An Iranian District Court judge ordered the U.S. Wednesday to pay $71.63 billion in damages to the families of 290 Iranian passengers whose plane was shot down by the U.S. Navy in the Persian Gulf, in 1988. ``The court cannot be stronger in condemning this action. It has no place in a civilized society,'' Judge Abdolkarim Sedighi told the court. Some 290 passengers of Iran Air flight 655 were killed when the U.S. cruiser, the Vincennes, fired two anti-aircraft missiles at it on July 3, 1988, at the height of the Iran-Iraq war... full text

* Halabja 10 years later: Why I Went, What I Saw, (Washington Post) - We have all talked so long and so reflexively about "weapons of mass destruction" that the phrase has lost much of its immediacy and meaning. It has become, like "nuclear devastation" and "chemical and biological warfare," an abstract term of governmental memos, punditry and political debate. For many it calls forth neither visual imagery nor visceral revulsion. On the 16th of March 1988, an Iraqi military strike subjected Halabja, a Kurdish town of 45,000 in northern Iraq, to bombardment with the greatest attack of chemical weapons ever used against a civilian population. The chemical agents used were a "cocktail" of mustard gas (which affects skin, eyes and the membranes of the nose, throat and lungs), and the nerve agents sarin, tabun and VX. The chemicals to which the people were exposed drenched their skin and clothes, affected their respiratory tracts and eyes and contaminated their water and food... full text
