* Top mathematicians killed in bus crash in Iran, (AFP) - Seven award-winning mathematicians were killed and several others injured when their bus turned over on a road in western Iran, radio and television said. The victims, including one who had won the gold medal at an international olympiad, were students at Tehran's Sanati-Sharif University, a high-caliber technical school in Iran. They were returning from a mathematics contest in the northwestern city of Ahvaz. The bus driver and the driver of another vehicle were also killed in the accident. The Iranian media gave wide coverage to the event after Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sent a message of condolences over the "painful loss." "Undoubtedly, the absence of such distinguished and bright talents is a big loss for the country," he said.

According to the latest issue of Psychology Today these addicts constitute one out of every nine Internet users in America. The addiction can lead to divorce, child neglect, the sack, debt, dropping out of school and legal trouble. Although the syndrome is not yet included as an ailment in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - the American "shrinks' bible" - experts believe that it is only a matter of time before Internet Addiction Disorder joins the list of identified psychiatric problems... full text ... * Total seeks more pacts with Iran, despite threat of U.S. sanctions, (Wall Street Journal) - Less than six months after signing a $2 billion oil deal with Iran, Total SA is back looking for more of the same in that country, despite the continuing threat of U.S. penalties."We don't intend to stay [in Iran] with just these two contracts," Thierry Desmarest, Total's chief executive, said Monday in an interview. "We look to [sign] additional contracts in Iran," he added, shrugging off the notion that the U.S. would act to penalize his company for ignoring its sanctions against Tehran, or succeed if it tried. Besides signing a deal at the end of September to develop Iran's giant South Pars oil and gas field, Total has contracted to develop the country's Sirri field. The Sirri contract predated the August 1996 U.S.-sanctions law against oil investments in Iran... full text

WOMEN
* Steps to the moon: I would like to inform you of a website, steps to the moon, that was created in November 1997. It is an example of how the web can be used as a creative medium. Steps to the moon documents the on-going effort by two iranian women, one in isolation in iran and the other in exile, to re-build their connection over the internet and through many years and thousands of miles of forced separation. parallel to this, the sitemaker turns her gaze inside to document her own thoughts as they surface in the process of her work on this project. Combining the personal, the political and the poetic, Steps to the moon is about two women, three collaborators and four presences in a single document. Mina Haque <metalibra@hotmail.com>

* The Persian Gulf is the Persian Gulf, (Focus on Iran) - There are those who are unaware of the historical truths and while they do not bother to study the history of the region, they unintentionally contribute to a psychological warfare against the Iranian people. Among them, are certain elements in the U.S. Defense Department, specially those who serve in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain. In order to appease local sensitivities, "they" use "Arabian Gulf" instead of the "Persian Gulf" simply to please their hosts, unaware that they are refusing to accept historical facts and international usage. Indeed they are offending the national feelings of the Iranian nation... full text...Thanks to Farhad Sepahbody<sepa@sedona.net>

Farah Pahlavi: From empress to net surfer
By Farhad Sepahbody
A few days back I was in New York. Between the United Nations and other places, this white-haired ex-Iranian diplomat-turned-reporter for the French press had the occasion of a brief encounter with Farah Pahlavi in her two-room diminutive office in Manhattan.
"You know," she said. "I like surfing the Net and look at all the Iranian sites. The many opinions of my compatriots interest me most." ... Go to feature

LETTERS
Sue the U.S.
Conservative supporters of Iran's leader Ayatollah Khameneie call the U.S. "World Arrogance." I can see this ring SO true when a U.S. court ruled in favor of the family of a woman who was killed in a bus bombing in Gaza.Iran was ordered to pay $275 million for the death of one American by the hands of a Palestinian group. Now shouldn't the U.S. pay Iran $68.7 billion for 250 Iranians killed DIRECTLY by the U.S. navy? ($275 million for each death). This brings up another interesting idea. Can Iran sue the U.S. for supporting Iraq during its unprovoked invasion of Iran? This should bring in some big money. Siyavash <Ordibehesht@digicron.com>
Insulting
Is this for real or are you making fun of a truly tragic event in world history (the shooting down of the Iran Air plane by the U.S. navy)? I am not at all amused at the name of the news agency "Twisted" News Network. I felt like that you were insulting all the people that tragically lost their lives, by starting off with a sarcastic name. Aref Eghbalian <ATakeshian@aol.com>

MUSIC

Lily Afshar
Guitarist Lily Afshar, hailed by the Washington Post as "remarkable, impecable," is head of the guitar program at the University of Memphis. Chosen to play for Segovia in his 1986 master classes at the University of Southern California, Afshar also won top prize in the 1988 Guitar Foundation of America competition, grand prize in the 1986 Aspen Music Festival, and first prize in both the 1984 MTNA and the 1983 ASTA competitions.
The clips that will be featured here this week are from her CD, "24 Caprichos de Goya." Composed in 1961 and published in 1970, the 24 Caprichos de Goya is one of the most original and monumental works for solo guitar. The pieces are inspired by Los Caprichos (1799), a series of 80 satirical prints in etching and acquatint by Francisco Goya, one of the great figures in Spanish painting.
In today's selection, "El amor y la muerte", the theme of passion and tragic futility of dueling is movingly illustrated by a Tempo di Tango.

I'm just a mirror
What's it to me if everyone looks down on me
And where I've one fault hundreds are suspected?
I'm just a mirror, and all those who frown on me
Are only seeing what's in them -- reflected.
