* Never the twain shall meet, (The Economist) - Despite the stubbornness of official attitudes, ordinary Iranians have generally fond memories of the time, before 1979, when America was deeply involved in their affairs. Many believe that renewed ties with America would lessen their economic hardship. Given this, the Iranian government may find it hard to continue to refuse to talk. Reformists hope that America will take "courageous" action to break the ice. By this, they mean an end to sanctions, approval for Iran's civilian nuclear programme and the unfreezing of billions of dollars in assets. If such steps began to be taken, the government might be able to justify the resumption of official contacts to its hardliners... full text

ARTS
* "Taste of Cherry": Too clever by half, (New Yorker, March 30, 1998) -Abbas Kiarostami's new film follows a prosperous man, Mr. Badii (Homayoun Ershadi, heading up a casat of nonprofessional actors), as he drives through the parched hills around Teheran begging strangers to help bury him once he commits suicide. The result is a fascinating neorealist excursion. Mr. Badii meets a shy Kurdish soldier, an Afghani seminarian, and a gregarious museum taxidermist; Kiarostami unfolds each new character with a humanistic patience that's rare in moview these days. The director also draws on his art-school training to show us a Teheran that is a horifying sprawl of concrete and exquisitely beautiful at the same time. The film isn't quite the masterpiece some critics are hailing it as: it sometimes ponderous existentialism seems too closely modelled on Europeean masterpieces of a generation ago, and its ending is too clever by half. But it is a collection of small, scattered miracles. - Sarah Kerr

Oh Nellie!
By White Cloud
Nellie was at home on 819 South Holt Ave., in Los Angeles, in the kitchen. She would fry the bacon and save the grease. She would cook peaches for winter and put them in jars like her mother Ruth had done in Idaho. We came to live with her when we came from Tehran in 1940. It was strange for both of us. At first it was the language barrier and then it was either too late to talk or we had all stopped talking. There was no chatter in the house or laughter either. Helen was out working and going to school. Aunt Mary worked at Sears. Papa was in the yard or garage or his war den. Every wall covered with pictures of the war: The Spanish American War, World War I and probably a few Indian wars for which we had no pictures. In a big rectangular photograph, Papa in his army captain's uniform was sitting on a horse, smiling.... full text
