History

Where it all started
Democratic concepts emerged during the 1906 Constituional Revolution

By Janet Afary

The Iranian

In The Iranian Constitutional Revolution, 1906-1911, I have focused on the influence of social democratic activists and organizations and have attempted to show that three divergent concepts of democracy emerged during the Constitutional Revolution: 1. a European-style parliamentary democracy represented by the Majlis-i Shawra-yi Milli (National Consultative Assembly) and the 1906 constitution, 2. a series of social democratic tendencies that were inspired predominantly by Transcaucasian social democratic associations in tsarist Russia, and 3. multiple expressions of radical democracy that manifested themselves in a variety of grassroots councils >>> GO TO FEATURE

Iran: Halfway Houses Try to Help Runaway Girls

By Azam Gorgin and Charles Recknagel
Radio Free Europe

Prague, 11 October 2000 (RFE/RL) -- Runaway girls are not an image usually associated with the Islamic Republic, which places a high value on public modesty and decorum for young women.

But like many other countries, Iran has its share of teenagers who take to the streets as their only refuge from problems at home. They become voluntary outcasts of society, frightened, and looking for ways to survive in Tehran, where the size of the city preserves their anonymity>>> FULL TEXT

Food: Iranians in the know know Persepolis

By John Kessler
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution
October 6, 2000

Think of rice. Great rice. Rice that's exactly as it should be.

If you're Japanese, you'll probably see it patted into a bowl, plump and pearly, stuck together without being sticky. If you're Italian, you may imagine a wet spoonful of risotto.

But if you're Persian, you expect a miracle --- an unreal mound of snowy fluff where each grain is long and slender and separate. And if you're Persian, you know where to find it >>> FULL TEXT

I am researching my family background and have disvocered form the British War Graves Commission that my great uncle, Private Thomas Edward Hope of the 976th M.T. Company, Army Service Corps died on Thursday the 10th October, 1918 and is buried in Tehran. I wonder if you can offer any details of the events surrounding his death or where I could look to discover such details. I would be very grateful.

Yours faithfully,

* Devalued argument

Ramin Tabib writes: Regarding Mr. Baniameri's piece "Blind date", isn't it better to debunk a stereotype without resorting to another one?

You are absolutely right in denouncing the stereotypes that are expressed about Iranian men, but doing so by way of stereotyping feminism (esp. Iranian feminism) devalues your argument.

Nonetheless, you are right to the point about cliches that surround Iranian men.

* IRI propaganda outlet

Hojabr writes: How much do we have to vomit to satisfy Mr. Kambiz Ameli? It is hard for me to come out with what I am compelled to write. And that is, by publishing the venom of the famous vomiter Mr. Ameli, The Iranian Times, probably inadvertently, has become another propaganda outlet for the Islamic Republic of Iran! Or is it intended?

Do not hide yourself behind the pretext of democracy or free flow of information. You have given enough of space to this vomiting, mud slinging gentleman. I think enough is indeed enough. Thank you for your other-wise good job.

    Poem

    Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

    What is sadness, that settles like dust

    On hearts that are bitter and burdened?

    The heart that holds God holds an ocean

    Whose joyous waves make the earth turn.
