Deaf & blind
Muzzling the press -- the eyes and ears of the people

By Hossein Bagher Zadeh
May 5, 2000
The Iranian

A major clampdown has started against the press in Iran. Just over a week ago, sixteen publications, including twelve national dailies, were shut down by the authorities. These include almost all the reformist press, which started publication in the last three years. As a result, the whole reform movement has been muzzled. More than 1,500 journalists and press workers have been made jobless and newspaper circulation has been cut by almost half...

Ebrahim Nabavi was in Toronto in response to an invitation from Shahrvand publication and Vazhe cultural group... A small man with a grand moustache that reminds many of the 60's era radicals, Nabavi is sharp, funny, witty and calculating >>> GO TO FEATURE

By Jahanshah Javid

The Iranian

I was completely surprised when I saw the police lights flashing in the rear-view mirror. I'm always surprised when I'm stopped by the police. But they always come up with a good reason.

It was around 2:30 in the morning.

"Hello sir! Do you know why I stopped you?"

"No. I have no idea. Why did you stop me?"

"You were swerving on the highway."

"I was swerving? I'm sorry. I didn't realize that."

"Did you consume any alcohol this evening, sir?"

"Ummm... " >>> GO TO FEATURE
