Stopped by Virginia police for "swerving"

By Jahanshah Javid
May 2, 2000
The Iranian

I was completely surprised when I saw the police lights flashing in the rear-view mirror. I'm always surprised when I'm stopped by the police. But they always come up with a good reason.

It was around 2:30 in the morning.

"Hello sir! Do you know why I stopped you?"

"No. I have no idea. Why did you stop me?"

"You were swerving on the highway."

"I was swerving? I'm sorry. I didn't realize that."

"Did you consume any alcohol this evening, sir?"

"Ummm... " >>> GO TO FEATURE

Outlook

Iran's troubles

Editorial
Financial Times, London
May 2, 2000

Mohammad Khatami, Iran's popular and moderate president, is facing his gravest challenge from conservative hardliners since his election three years ago. Western governments and investors are understandably worried. The Middle East needs a stable Iran. Its population of more than 60m, vast energy reserves, and the power to disrupt or foster the Middle East peace process cannot be ignored. For the moment, the west's best strategy is to say and do little to risk upsetting a precarious state of affairs >>> FULL TEXT

The Radical Philanthropist

Pierre Omidyar invented Ebay and made billions of dollars. That turned out to be the easy part. Now he wants to give it away--and reinvent charity in the process.

Forbes Magazine (May 1, 2000) -- PIERRE OMIDYAR, THE FOUNDER of Ebay, had been one of the world's richest men for about a month when he and his wife, Pamela, went to a brunch at Yahoo founder Jerry Yang's home in Los Altos, Calif. in November 1998. The money did not set him apart from the other guests, however. The 40 couples, who ate wild mushrooms and sushi as they admired Yang's view from the hills of Silicon Valley, were worth about $30 billion total >>> FULL TEXT

    * Newspaper ban is right

    Murtaza Sarwary writes: I'm an Iranian living in Canada. I was born in Zanjan, Iran, and lived most of my life. In response to the 16 newpaper closures in Iran, I would like to say that the Islamic government of Iran is doing the right thing ["Three steps back"].

    These journalists have questioned Islamic law in Iran and its the duty of the Islamic Republic to protect Islam by any means whatsoever. We gave 1,000,000 martyrs in the Jihad against Saddam to protect Islam and the Iranian people.

    Khomeini told us to be careful when he's gone and the enemies will try to start a war in Iran and against Islam. And now these stupid students want more democracy! May Islam prevail forever in beautiful Iran.

* Helllllo freedom!

B. J. writes: Mummy Joon told me: Whoever you call or write to, you should start and end by saying: SALAAM BAR AAZAADI, DOROOD BAR MATBOOAAT!!! ["Three steps back"]

    Poetry

Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

You who live by the grace of this world's love,
Shame on you! Why do you live this way?
Don't live without love, like a lifeless corpse.
Die for love: lay down your life, that you may stay alive. -- Rumi
