More than one hundred prominent academics in the United States, including the heads of more than ten universities, have written a letter to President Khatami expressing concern over the fate of hundreds of students arrested following last July's protests. High hopes
Am I dreaming, or is this the new Iran?

Written and photographed by Siamak Namazi
March 2, 2000
The Iranian

I've made it a habit not to comment on the photographs that I submit to The Iranian. But today's event at Tehran's Hosseiniyeh Ershad, the famous setting where Dr. Ali Shariati once delivered his lectures, were too moving not to write something about the photographs. The gathering was one of the now regular meetings organized by teh reform movement. This particular one was supposed to discuss the role of the press in the recent Majles elections...

Try to take in the wide shot: a group of reform-minded figures in Iranian politics, with varying ideologies, are talking completely candidly with thousands of people. Nothing is off limits. NOTHING >>> GO TO FEATURE

Misplaced
Spending the Majlis elections in the United States

By Shadi Mokhtari
March 1, 2000
The Iranian

The long awaited sixth Majles elections had finally arrived. When the polls had opened in Iran, it was probably about 9 o'clock in the evening for me in the United States. I stayed up most of the night searching for any picture, video clip, or article about the elections I could find on the Internet. I had never wanted so desperately to be in Iran, to take part in and witness the important historic transition it was undertaking and to be surrounded by the energy of a society aware of the need for change.

In the morning I hunted for something I could wear or carry around with me to display my invigoration and personal sense of connection to what was taking shape thousands of miles away. I even contemplated making a "Iran baraa-ye hame-ye Iraaniaan" sign to carry in order to make an emphatic statement though I knew there was no one to receive it. >>> GO TO FEATURE

The next India?
Iranian software industry

February 29, 2000
The Iranian

As Iran seeks ways to diversify its export base and move away from over-reliance on oil exports, both the government and private sector seek high-value added industries where Iran could have a competitive advantage. In the following interview Ahmad Kiarostami, managing director of Negah, one of Iran's leading software companies, discussed Iran's potentials and shortcomings in this area. The interview also reveals the potential of a dangerous new development affecting Iranian Internet service providers. >>> GO TO FEATURE

Hand me a pillow
Sensual paintings by Victoria Amini

February 28, 2000
The Iranian

"In an idiom of our times, caught up in a pictorial whirl, Victoria Amini transports us through a world of intimacy and unveiling mystery. As the dream leaves the universe of man it soars away into the world of Nature, to an Eden sparkling with color and light, fantasy and chimera."

That's how Giorgio Zambelli has described Amini's work.

Although I must admit that the first thing that attracted me to Amini's paintings was the fact that she's Iranian. Indeed I was thrilled to see that an Iranian artist has so sensuously celebrated the human form, something our artists have shied away from. >>> GO TO FEATURE
