King of the Benighted
Novella by the late Houshang Golshiri

June 8, 2000
The Iranian

Excerpts from Houshang Golshiri's "Shaah-e siyaah-pooshaan" or King of the Benighted (1990, Mage Publishers) translated by Abbas Milani. Golshiri, a prominent author and human rights activist, died on June 5 at the age of 63.

The book was published under the pen name "Manuchehr Irani" -- a name used by many writers living in Iran and publishing their work abroad. King of the Benighted, written after the 1979 revolution, was Golshiri's first work to be translated and initially published in English under a pseudony. >>> GO TO FEATURE

Outlook

Iran: Pinning hopes on economic reforms

Middle East Economic Digest
Weekly Special Report
June 9, 2000

The latest figures from Iran's Bank Markazi (central bank) show that the economy is starting to react to the recovery in oil prices since March 1999. As OPEC's second largest oil producer, Iran's fortunes are closely tied to the price of oil. Ambitious reforms under the stewardship of President Khatami aim to reduce the economy's vulnerability to external shocks and also remove many of the distortions and inefficiencies that plague the country's finances >>> FULL TEXT

WASHINGTON DIARIST
Exile

By Negar Akhavi
The New Republic
June 12, 2000

It's a sad state of affairs when the only person speaking up for your country is Madeleine Albright--especially when she is speaking out of both sides of her mouth. So seems to be the case with Iran. In the course of one month, Albright has gone from pledging to support Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's reform agenda and hailing "the democratic winds in Iran" to lobbying the World Bank not to lend money to improve Iranian public health because Tehran doesn't uphold the rule of law. But, as frustrating as Albright's "two steps forward, one step back" rapprochement is, even more frustrating is the response of Iranians in America. That is because there is no response >>> FULL TEXT

Clashes in Mashhad

A reader writes: Two days ago Mashhad rocked: thousands and thousands were in the street, mostly students and others followed. It was a huge huge clash with the authorities who used force, including bullets. Many got killed and trampled. It has been the most intense as of yet. I'm not sure why this news isn't getting out of Iran. what are these news wires doing there? Picking their toes? Jesus.

* Ghesseh-haaye khoob

Joonevar writes: When I was a kid in Iran, this was my favorite book ["The donkey's gone"]. I think I must have read it at least fifty times. After many years I was able to have one of my family members send it to me, and funnily enough I was reading it about a week ago. I still enjoy it and I'm now thirty-two-years old which doesn't quite qualify me for "Ghesseh-haaye khoob baraaye bacheh-haaye khoob" as a bacheh!

* Sweet & simple

PT writes: May I tell you that I felt tears in my eyes when I read your essay ["The window"]. That was so sweet and full of Iranian feeling. I love the way you write. It is simple, sweet and you can feel it with all of your heart. I am always looking forward to reading more of your sweet essays.

    Poetry

Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

One day your mind will finally wear out;

They'll point at you and mock your feeble face.

If you're human, then make peace with the rest of us.

If you're an angel, then go; the sky's your place.
-- Rumi
