Home coming
Realizing that Tehran is the only city you have ever loved

By Khordad
July 27, 2000
The Iranian

After 21 years, Fariba found me. Unexpectedly. Found me. In a place I had not planned to be. In Park-e Honar. In Tehran. In Iran. Where, I had returned. Re Turned. After an absence of 20 years, decided, unexpectedly, to stay. Stay for a little while. Stay for an undefined length of time. Stay for as long as it felt good, for as long as it was necessary, until life should take me away. Away. Again >>> GO TO FEATURE

By Esmail Nooriala
July 24, 2000
The Iranian

The coming to end of Shamlou's bodily life can only be considered an inescapable natural occurrence with no direct impact on the literary history of modern Persian poetry. But it was the inevitable force of his words and deeds that has crept into and completely conquered modern Persian literature and culture, rendering modern Iranian writers and thinkers a challenging standard of excellence in humanist thought and literary achievement that will live long after he has left his dusty shell >>> GO TO FEATURE

Molavi bird market in Tehran

July 24, 2000
The Iranian

Birds (and a variety of other animals) have been bought and sold in the long, narrow alleys of downtown Tehran's Molavi district for ages. Some come to buy chickens for dinner. Others are pigeon collectors. And some are looking for love birds or parots as pets >>> GO TO FEATURE

Come back (and be quiet)
Iran's conditions for returing expatriates

By Khordad
July 21, 2000
The Iranian

It is absurd to imagine that Iranians living abroad would come back to Iran to work toward economic and technical development, based simply on good will and nationalistic sentiment, without being overwhelming tempted to address issues of political instability and freedom. In fact, open and upfront discussions about political and personal freedoms, the rule of law, individual protection under the law and pluralism need to be precursors to any attempts at regaining the trust, the cooperation and the eventual return of Iran's expatriate community. Economic and technical development issues then can follow suit >>> GO TO FEATURE
