Can't there be change without violence?

By Najmeh Fakhraie

The Iranian

In some Arab tribes when a girl is born, she automatically belongs to her cousin (pesar amou). Now the problem occurs when the girl's family moves away to the city for some reason. She goes to school and maybe even to college, "expands her horizons", meets people she never could have DREAMED of meeting in the village and maybe even falls in love. Not good. Because then the cousin finds out and you find two dead bodies the next day. She's long gone and so is her "true love". Sometimes she agrees to marry the cousin to save her lover and burns herself on their wedding night >>> GO TO FEATURE

    Anyway

President?

An Iranian-American is elected President of the United States. He calls his mother and says, "Mom, I have just been elected. Will you come to my inaguration?"

After a couple minutes of convincing her, she reluctantly accepts.

While the new president is being sworn in, his mother says to the secretary of defense,"You see my baby up there, his brother is a doctor."

* Showing a new reality

* Get over it

Omeed Alaverdi writes: It was sad to read your editorial ["And the winner is..."]. Clearly, it is a partisan view of the recent U.S. election. I do not want to discuss any partisan politics here. Poem

    Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

    If they all leave me, my love, don't go.

    Friend, who drinks my sadness up, don't go.

    Fill my cup with wine, and your sweet laugh.

    Please, good Saghi, who lights the world, don't go.

Dreaming

I have a 12-year-old boy who has been harassing me for a year or two to go live in the United States... My son thinks the United States is the home of all things good. ... At first I thought my son was joking but one day it dawned on me that my other children were saying the same thing.
