The Economist
April 19, 2000

T E H R A N

A BOLD press has, for some time, disguised the powerlessness of Iran's reform movement. Liberal journalists have slammed into everything and everybody, from the intelligence service to a former president to senior ayatollahs. But this week the conservative establishment muzzled the flamboyant press, sucking out the breath of reform. By April 27th, no fewer than 16 newspapers and journals had been shut down by hardliners in the judiciary, leaving the news-stands bare of all such trouble-makers >>> FULL TEXT

    Anyway

Question

As Iran is becoming more and more liberal and "Westernized" in goods ways as well as "bad" ways (losing its traditional culture), how is homosexuality perceived among these modern day changes?

    Poetry

Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

She's gone--no one has ever been so good a friend;
Gone before my heart was full, or ready for an end.
She's gone, and with her the cure for this pain.
The rose is gone and still the thorn remains -- Rumi

Concerned

We clearly are very concerned about what is happening there now, and would hope this is not the overwhelming trend... Those who have voted for President Khatami or for the Majlis reform members are younger generation. They are the future of Iran.
