    TEHRAN - Former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani signs his formal request, December 15, to be a candidate in the sixth parliamentary elections to be held February 18, 2000. Hardline conservatives, worried about a landslide vote for pro-reform candidates pushed Rafsanjani, currently chairman of the State Expediancy Council, to enter the race. (Related news here)
