Conservative MP: Internet okay, satellites not

Isfahan, june 1, irna -- a member of the presiding board of the islamic consultative assembly (majlis) said here monday that it is the right of the candidates to be informed by the council of guardians of the compiled reasons for the rejection or confirmation of their eligibility.

mohammad reza bahonar who is also a majlis representative from tehran told a student gathering at 'malek ashtar' technical university in isfahan that in the case of the insistence of the candidate, those reasons can be even printed in the press.

as for the approbatory supervision of the council of guardians, bahonar said that ''supervision'' is meaningless in the absence of 'interference''.

he stressed that a supervisory body should exist outside the administration structure to protect people's rights, adding that this body must be able to prevent violation and wrong doing.

as for economic situation in the country, bahonar said although steps have already been taken for the adjustment of economic policies, lack of coordination and difference of opinion among members of the economic headquarters -- comprising governor of the central bank, economy and finance minister and head of the plan and budget organization -- have overshadowed economic issues.

elsewhere in his speech, the tehran deputy rejected public use of satellites for spreading corruption, and advised those who seek access to scientific sources to use computer networks and other facilities.

commenting on the issue of impeachment, bahonar said since the victory of the islamic revolution 10 ministers in five terms of the majlis have been impeached of whom eight have received vote of confidence.

he said the deputies have vowed to notify ministers, question them in majlis sessions or impeach them in case they notice any instances contrary to the law.

asked to comment on the composition of the sixth majlis, bahonar said it is an issue which cannot be easily predicted as it is not attached to a certain party. however, he added, the constitution should be amended so that parties can participate in the elections.

he termed establishment of rational relations between the people and the government as among the most valuable assets of the system, adding that for this reason the government should give high priority to the issue of national unity and security based on islamic principles.

cautioning against cultural inroads, he said extravagance should be avoided in certain sectors of the development, adding that no political, cultural and economic sectors of the development should be sacrificed for others.
