    The Iranian

When I left a message on Taraneh Hemami's answering machine in San Francisco, I knew little about her or her work . But I had met so many other great Iranian artists since I moved to northern California that I thought there was a good chance I would like her work. I was right. I loved them .

At her suggestion, we met at the Brainwash cafe near downtown San Francisco, and later went to a computer center to scan and take a look at her slides . It did not take long to realize her great talent -- and my luck.

Hemami, a Tehrani who got her masters in fine arts from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1991, has been a prominant and active member of the San Francisco art scene .

Her work was featured on the cover of Art Week magazine in 1994 and she has had numerous exhibitions (paintings and installations) in recent years, including at the LAB, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Rental Gallery and the J. Paul Getty Trust gallery in Los Angeles .

She will set up an installation at the Contemporary Arts Collective, Four Walls, curated by Donna Schumacher, in Las Vegas next year. Don't miss it.
